Photo: Getty ImagesThe Reserve Bank (RBNZ) is proposing to impose a new type of mortgage lending restriction on banks from the middle of the year. "We believe introducing DTI restrictions will reduce financial stability risks, support house price sustainability, and fill a gap that is not covered by existing policies. "Introducing DTI restrictions will also allow us to loosen LVR settings without increasing risks to financial stability." The RBNZ believed DTI restrictions would only really affect the housing market once it picked up. The RBNZ was empowered by the previous Labour-led Government to impose DTI restrictions.

“Another announcement followed that none of the UK airports could take us, so we were going to Paris, and that actually got a cheer,” Mr Cassidy said. Mr Cassidy and his sister arrived home just after 2am on Monday, more than 12 hours after they originally thought they would be arriving in Dublin. Those on board Ryanair flight FR633 from Copenhagen to Dublin on Sunday, however, might consider Mr Cassidy and his fellow passengers lucky. That plane was diverted from Dublin to Manchester, and after spending four hours grounded there, passengers endured a further three hours circling Dublin as the pilot attempted to land. Another Ryanair flight that was scheduled to make the short half-hour trip across the Irish Sea from Manchester to Dublin ended up making a three-hour detour circling Dublin, Belfast and then ultimately ending up back in Manchester having not reached its destination.

As readers will be aware, New Zealand faces some severe economic and social challenges. Tax- Labour’s 2019 Tax Working Group pulled together the best tax brains in the country to make recommendations on tax policy. In addition, we need to consider the merits of a low-level land tax, applied at least to unoccupied residential land. New Zealand thus faces a cruel dilemma: The need for policy consensus is urgent given the challenges ahead, but the political framework for that consensus is absent. Until, as a nation, we can reclaim the middle ground New Zealand’s future will remain at risk of a very uncomfortable economic and social adjustment.

This year we speak to individuals who made their mark on 2023 and brought us truly impactful work. Raymond Otene McKay (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Rongomaiwahine, Ngaati Maahuta), is Co-Founder and CCO at Run Aotearoa. We asked him what he thought of 2023, and what he hopes to see in 2024. What piece of work are you most proud to have been involved with in 2023? I admire his tenacity in successfully putting together the first Māori Tech Awards, securing a million dollars in funding, and continuing to push for representation in STEM and tech for our Māori SMEs and communities.

Japan's December CPI inflation rate came in at 2.6%, down from 2.8% in November. 2.3% is a 17 month low even if over all of 2023 inflation was at a 41 year high in Japan. They [rightly] point out that inflation and inflation expectations are still far too high. The UST 10yr yield starts today at 4.13% and down -3 bps from this time Saturday. Effectively if it was passed it would be difficult to see how the treaty could have any further effect. He also completely misrepresented the treaty and continued with the lie that under the treaty Māori gave up their rights of governance. If you think about the historical context and the time that the treaty was signed you will understand this. He says this:The National Hui for Unity was only called by Kīngi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII (Kīngi Tuheitia) at the beginning of December. I looked at the coalition agreements between National and ACT, and National and New Zealand First.
