Mason Holgate’s thigh-high tackle on Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma after 13 minutes was labelled “scandalous” and “horrible” as the defender opened the floodgates for another Sheffield United thrashing. “I’m torn,” sighed Chris Wilder, the Sheffield United manager. And I’m angry because as an experienced pro, Mason has to do better. “He’s apologised, he knows he’s done wrong and I understand why the referee sent him off. What I’m not torn about is that if it hadn’t happened we wouldn’t have been done 5-0.”

When he lost his 15-year-old daughter, Jayde Cummings, in a crash, his own life started to collapse around him. But that apology, and a handshake, didn't come until the end of the coronial hearing, almost four years after the crash. It comes as the coroner found the cause of the crash was the carelessness of the driver, but a contractor's inaction contributed. The council contractor, Downer Ltd, argued the crash was caused by driver carelessness, as the Youth Court found. The finding"Downer's inaction contributed to the crash and to the deaths of Jayde Cummings and Stephen Macnee," the coroner said in his findings.

Blues prop Marcel Renata has had to amputate his middle finger to continue playing professional rugby. In an interview with Stuff.co.nz, Renata recalled the remarkable story of how he sacrificed the damaged finger on his right hand to keep pursuing his Super Rugby career. “It was in bits really, from footy,” the 29-year-old told Stuff ahead of the Super Rugby season. “I stopped enjoying the game and I stopped enjoying training because I was so sore. I think that finger catches quite a bit of liquid, so I have to do the old double pump.”Photo: Albert Perez/Getty Images

There's belief the Government will hit their 100 day plan target. Prime Minister Chris Luxon celebrated what they've done in the first 81 days in today's State of the Nation speech, including abolishing Three Waters, banning cell phones in class and bringing back 90 day trials. But Herald Deputy Political Editor Thomas Coughlan says some of the remaining 49 points shouldn't be rushed. "Particularly in the justice sector, the gang patches legislation and the search powers for firearms- that's the stuff you want to get quite right when you're dealing with a fractured sort of relationship between the police and the gangs." The coalition Government plans to crack down on low-skilled work visas and devise a long term population plan to guide future policy settings. Erica Stanford, the Minister of Immigration, told TVNZ that current levels of net migration were unsustainable. Her expectation was that net migration would get back into “equilibrium” over time as the covid disruption normalized. The minister wouldn’t talk specifically about what changes she was considering, but said the accredited employee work visa rules would be tightened. The accredited work visa has been under review since August last year and that report was due to be delivered last December.

Christopher Luxon has set out his vision for the country in his first State of the Nation address as Prime Minister, promising to be "straight up" with Kiwis about the country's "fragile" situation. "It tied down our economy with unnecessary regulation, and saw farmers and businesses as something to be sneered at rather than celebrated," Luxon said. Throughout the speech, Luxon referred to "tough choices" and kept coming back to welfare dependency, pointing to the additional 70,000 now on a Jobseeker unemployment benefit compared to 2017. "I won't apologise for making tough choices to support young people off welfare and into work, because 24 years languishing on welfare means no hope. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

The block of shops is half empty, with a curtain retailer and a United Video store sitting abandoned on the main road. There are a few stores remaining in the section, which is operated by the Upper Hutt Mall, such as the Pet Centre, Bayleys, GO NZ and a cinema. Photo: Stuff/Ryan AndersonWhen Stuff visited the property, a strong smell was immediately obvious while still a block away. Black mould could be seen on several roof sections of the store, while many other panels were damp and discoloured. Several buckets could be seen inside the store on the floor, as well as in the ceiling.

Wakatipu Community Foundation’s (WCF) inaugural chair Ray Key is reflecting on an amazing six years as he prepares to step aside at the end of the month. ‘‘We have raised over $4 million and have in excess of $35m pledged in wills for the local community,’’ Key says. He believes the community foundation model makes so much sense — ‘‘at its core is the aim to build and grow funds so money is available to the local community forever’’. Brent says his vision is for WCF to be a billion-dollar fund within 30 years, ‘‘and I’m excited to guide the organisation to realise this goal’’. ‘‘It’s a big one, but with the significant funds being transferred from the baby boomer generation in the next few decades, it’s entirely achievable.’’Meanwhile, Key’s remaining chair of the umbrella Community Foundation of Aotearoa NZ, and is staying on as a WCF trustee.

The Russian opposition leader died at a prison inside the Artic Circle where he was serving a 19-year sentence. “The doctors who arrived at the scene continued the resuscitation measures that the prison’s doctors had already provided,” RIA quoted an official as saying. The ambulance team reached the prison in less than seven minutes, and doctors reached the patient two minutes later.”The Russian prison service said Navalny “felt unwell after a walk” and “almost immediately” lost consciousness. If this is true, then not ‘Navalny died’, but ‘Putin killed Navalny’ and only that. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “The immediate reaction of Nato leaders to Navalny’s death in the form of direct accusations against Russia was self-exposing”.
