Our family has a pet dog whose name is Tarwin, a male Shih Tzu, and he has been with our family for five years. To keep Tarwin happy, my family members and I often take him out for walks whenever we are free. If no one is around to wash his paws, he would wait in the bathroom until one of the family members obliges. Tarwin usually calms down and is content when we comfort him and stay beside him when he is afraid. Whenever there are sausages being cooked in the kitchen, his sharp nose picks up the scent and he hangs around family members who are eating sausages.

The Pfizer vaccine is mainly reaching the world’s rich. Selling mainly to rich countries, by April, Pfizer had earned around US$900 million in pre-tax profits from vaccine sales. Not a single major vaccine or pharmaceutical company has joined the WHO Covid-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) initiative to share such knowledge. Taxpayer-funded basic and applied research has been essential for Covid-19 vaccine development. As governments have paid, directly and indirectly, for vaccine development, they can now quickly accelerate further progress needed.

AS a non-resident of Malaysia, I was very pleased that the government included non-residents like me (and many thousands of other non-residents) in its vaccination programme. Yesterday, 200 78- and 79-year-olds were scheduled for jabs in Melaka and we were expertly and efficiently dealt with by friendly, professional staff. They took care to make sure that I understood what I was told after I advised them of my hearing loss and I observed special care being taken with others in wheelchairs, etc. After the jab, I asked “Where do I pay”, and I was told “Payment not required”. I am hopeful that the government of my home country, New Zealand, will extend the same courtesy to Malaysians and other nationals currently in the country.
