KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 26): theedgemalaysia.com highlighted three stocks with momentum at Bursa Malaysia’s afternoon close on Friday. Two showed positive momentum, while another one showed negative momentum. The algorithm differentiates between stocks that exhibit positive (+ve) momentum and negative (-ve) momentum. It merely tells you which stocks are seeing higher-than-normal volume and price movements. But the “+ve” (suggesting a rising price trend on volume) and “-ve” (suggesting a falling price trend on volume) indicators should give readers a better idea of what the market is buying and when to sell.

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 26): A total of 622,283 job placements were recorded under the MYFutureJobs initiative from 2023 to Dec 19, reflecting the effectiveness of active labour market policies and the country’s economic resilience amid global uncertainties. Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan said the achievement was in line with the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) positive assessment of Malaysia’s economic performance and resilience. “Economic growth must go hand in hand with the creation of quality jobs. “This approach includes active job matching, skills development, social security protection, implementation of the Progressive Wage Policy and more competitive wage offerings to ensure that the country’s economic growth translates into quality job opportunities, sustainable income and a competitive workforce,” said Ramanan. BEIJING (Dec 26): China on Friday said it will continue to regulate crude steel output and prohibit the addition of illegal new capacity from 2026 to 2030. In 2021, the world's largest steel producer and consumer put an end to growth in crude steel output as part of a plan to limit carbon emissions. In the first 11 months of 2025, China's crude steel output fell 4% from a year earlier, keeping the annual total on track to fall below one billion tons, the first time in six years. Since 2023, China's steel exports have been robust, partly offsetting falling demand at home. Last week, Beijing unveiled a plan to roll out a licensing system from 2026 to regulate exports of some 300 steel-related items.

The yen weakened to as much as 156.49 per dollar after the release, after trading around 155.80 before the data came out. Last week the BOJ’s board voted unanimously to lift the policy rate to 0.75%, the highest level since 1995. In its latest policy statement, the bank said inflation is expected to meet the bank’s target in the latter half of its projection period through fiscal year 2027. The deceleration was partly driven by fading food inflation, and the trend will likely continue going ahead. “If in June or July underlying inflation looks reasonably firm, then a rate hike could come under consideration.”

MELAKA: Hotels across the historic city are lit up with elaborate festive displays, reflecting Melaka’s spirit of unity while preserving a long-standing tradition that has become part of the state’s tourism identity, says a local councillor. “Christmas decorations at hotels here are consistent with past years and, in some cases, even more attractive, despite recent public confusion over a circular linked to restrictions involving halal-certified restaurants and kitchens,” he said on Thursday (Dec 25). Lee said festive decorations have long been part of Melaka’s tourism landscape and should continue in line with the state government’s efforts to promote tourism, investment and economic development. On Dec 19, Melaka’s education, higher learning and religious affairs committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said hotels in the historic city are permitted to continue displaying Christmas decorations, with restrictions applying only to kitchens and restaurants holding halal certification. The following day, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar clarified that there are no restrictions on halal certification holders from displaying festive decorations linked to religions other than Islam, provided halal standards are upheld.
