Libya maritime deal also in Turkish schools
Turkey’s Ministry of Education is also including the Turkey-Libyan maritime memorandum in the new educational program for school students, along with the “Blue Homeland” dogma that expresses Ankara’s claims in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. “Students can be assigned research projects on international problems and solutions related to water, the agreement on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction in the Mediterranean signed between Turkey and Libya, regional water disputes, national security and water security, unfair claims on Turkey’s water resources, Turkey’s islands, international migration to Turkey due to drought or possible water-related migration scenarios within the country,” states the “Century of Turkey” program regarding the ninth-grade geography curriculum. As Kathimerini has revealed, middle and high school students in Turkey will be taught the importance of the Blue Homeland with maps. Regarding history, the new program states that in high school, “through various sources, students are provided with the opportunity to examine the topics: Korean War, Turkey’s NATO membership, the Cyprus problem and the Cyprus Peace Operation, Greek-Turkish relations, Turkey’s maritime geopolitics and Turkey’s maritime jurisdiction – Blue Homeland, unsubstantiated Armenian claims and ASALA terrorism, Turkey-EU relations, ties with the Turkish world, the Nagorno-Karabakh problem and the Bosnian war.”The Turkish Ministry recommends that from September 2024, when the new school year will start, students may be asked to research the life and work of important figures such as first Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic, Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and Sadik Ahmet. Meanwhile, in the statement issued after a meeting of the Turkish National Security Council, there was no mention of Greek-Turkish relations and developments in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.However, Turkish media, which had information from government sources, had reported that the issue of Athens-Ankara relations would be on the agenda.

Brent hits three-week low below $111; Libya could boost supply
Brent rose 3 cents to $110.67 a barrel by 0642 GMT, near a more than three-week low of $110.51 hit earlier. State-run National Oil Corp lifted force majeure from the major eastern Ras Lanuf and Es Sider oil ports after rebels agreed last week to end a blockade to press financial and political demands. But geopolitical tensions in Iraq and Ukraine should continue to underpin oil prices. Brent hit this year's high above $115 in June when fighting broke out in northern Iraq. "There is still uncertainty in Iraq and Ukraine, supporting oil prices at these levels," Hasegawa said, adding that Brent could easily test the year's high if there was any sign of supply disruption.

Four employees at the National Commercial Bank sought for LD 4.86 million fraud
The Attorney General’s Office reported yesterday that its Prosecutor has detained the Current Accounts Officer and seeking three other employees at the National Commercial Bank – Zawiya Refinery Branch. The four bank employees are sought by the law for using forged bank instruments for illicit gains amounting to over LD 4.86 million.

Malta opens new visa application centre in Misrata
The Maltese Embassy in Libya announced today that it had opened a new visa application centre in Misrata yesterday. The centre is in partnership with visa processing company VFS Global. Ambassador Saliba further recalled that just as Malta was the first European Union Member State to introduce direct flights between Malta and Libya, Malta was again taking the initiative as the first member of the Schengen area to open a visa application office in Misrata in order to facilitate the submission of visa applications for the communities in Misrata and neighbouring cities. Misrata, the embassy added, is considered as a major hub for business activities, as well as a maritime hub with its port and Freezone area and air link with a newly built airport. Similarly, Jonathan Engerer, the Consul of Malta, highlighted that since his arrival at the Embassy a year ago, the opening of this visa application centre was earmarked as a priority.

Engineering exports surge 32.3% YoY during first 4M of 2024
Cairo – May 28, 2024: During the first four months of 2024, Egypt’s engineering exports witnesses a significant surge of 32.3 percent to record a value of $1.673 billion, compared to $1.264 billion in the same period last year. According to Sherif Al-Sayyad, Chair of Egypt's Engineering Export Council, April 2024 reported a record 50.3 percent increase in engineering exports, the highest in the sector’s history, reaching $431.5 million, compared to $287.1 million in April 2023. Al-Sayyad underscored the success of export expansion plans in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, contributing to the state's strategy of enhancing commodity exports and reaching the $145 billion export target by 2030. Executive Director of the Engineering Export Council, Mai Helmy, outlined the council's strategy to boost exports by 15-20 percent by the end of 2024. This includes participating in international exhibitions, organizing trade missions, and external trade weeks.

Sudan's two million Christians have particular reason to fear a continuation of the conflict. Observers fear that the ongoing violence may be used as a pretext for greater persecution of believers, making an already fraught existence harder for Christians.

UN holds urgent meeting on Rafah airstrike casualties
The council announced via its "X" platform account that the consultations will address "the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue." Diplomatic sources informed the Agence France-Presse on Monday that the closed-door meeting was requested by Algeria, a non-permanent member of the council. The Israeli army stated that it is investigating reports that an airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Rafah caused the fire. Takala meets with German minister and discusses the path towards the elections
The head of the High Council of State, Mohammed Takala, has held talks with the Minister of State at the German Foreign Ministry, and Member of the German Parliament, Katja Keul, ways to achieve a democratic path leading to consensual elections. Both sides reviewed cooperation between the two countries and ways to enhance them, in addition to developments in the political situation in Libya. The meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the High Council of State in Tripoli, was attended by the Chairman of the Council’s Political Committee, as well as the German Political Advisor, the Deputy Head of the Maghreb Department of the German Foreign Ministry, and the German Ambassador to Libya.

PM outlines risks facing Libyan Investments in Africa
The Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah spoke about four risks facing Libyan investments in Africa. His notes were made during an expanded meeting on Monday to follow up on investments in African countries. Meanwhile, the Director General of the Libya Africa Investment Portfolio, Mohamed Al-Miladi, gave a presentation that included the portfolio’s activity in Africa and the difficulties facing the portfolio in all countries. He described the current situation of the portfolio as “positive” compared to previous years. The Director of the Libyan Foreign Bank, Khalid Al-Konsul, said that Burkina Faso’s decision to nationalize a joint bank with Libya is an illegal measure, which was made “despite the efforts by the Libyan Foreign Bank and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Burkina Faso's side for a legal settlement.”Last Thursday, Burkina Faso government announced the nationalization of the Libyan Arab Bank for Trade and Development, which was established in partnership with the Libyan Foreign Bank, claiming that it aims to ensure better governance of the bank.

UNDP Libya’s 2023 Annual Report released
The UNDP Libya office published its 2023 Annual Report yesterday. The report stated that 2023 was ‘‘a year marked by resilience and rigorous efforts amidst significant challenges. The report said that in 2023, the UNDP Libya’s journey was shaped by the priorities set forth in the UNDP’s three-year Country Programme Document (2023-2025), which focuses on local peacebuilding, strengthening democratic governance, and advancing our energy and environmental initiatives. Some highlights of the 2023 Annual Report include:Enhanced access and quality of basic services for over 832,859 people across 21 municipalities. New Turkish ambassador to Libya named as Guven Begec – to start ‘‘soon’’
A Turkish source confirmed to Libya Herald today that a new ambassador to Libya will be taking over from Kenan Yilmaz at Tripoli ‘‘soon’’. The new ambassador, announced last Friday, will be Guven Begec. Begec was serving as the Permanent Representative of Turkey to the UN Geneva Office.
