The referendum, seeking to amend portions of the Constitution of Liberia was scheduled by the 54th Legislature in a joint resolution to be held together with the Special Senatorial Elections in December. However, with less than two months to the polls, there have been mounting calls for the referendum to be postponed due to inadequate civic education. The lawmakers are also being joined by several civil society groups, under the banner ‘The Liberian Women Can Lead Consortium. The group, in a statement delivered to the Legislature and read in plenary on Friday, pleaded for the referendum to be postponed to the last Tuesday in March 2021. The group called for the increased and sustained public awareness on the referendum through the information services and increased funding to the National Elections Commission.

Liberia: LFA Summersaults; Apologizes To Charles Massaley after Incriminating Him in Damaging ReportMonrovia – The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has shamefully extended an apology to Muscat FC President, Charles Massaley, and Wafu Zone A U-20 Nations Cup squad’s technical staff, for recklessly incriminating them. It followed the publication of a grievance and disciplinary committee report, which recommended that Massaley and the technical staff (head coach Robert Lartey, deputy coach Cooper Sannah and goalkeeping coach Robertson Waner) be given warning letters for failing to appear before it. LFA secretary-general Isaac Montgomery, in an October 8 letter, apologized to Massaley, who was head of delegation and the technical staff, because they weren’t formally invited. The FA is gradually becoming very political as it has been rumored that most decisions emerging from its Grievance and Disciplinary Committee are as a result of inside influence. Stakeholders have on many occasions questioned the independence of the FA’s Grievance and Disciplinary Committee.

Founded by freed slaves from the United States, Liberia’s governmental system and its constitution is modeled on that of the United States, with one notable exception: Unlike the American federal system, Liberia is a Unitary state. These central governments (and this model is also practiced in federal nations) tend to be either a presidential system of government, a semi-presidential system, or a parliamentary system of government. In a semi-presidential system, the president is usually only the head of state. In a semi-presidential system, no one person can truly dominate a political party. The dependent relationship between the President and the Prime Minister is also seen between the Prime Minister and the legislature.

THE CPP says its decision comes at a time when the country is on a path of imminent decay as our systems fail us. BOTH THE CPP AND THE COP at the time were united in their voice on what they wanted to achieve. Y’all sit down there.”BOTH YORGBOR AND MR. COSTA has labeled the CPP as weak and claiming glory that the COP is a better alternative for Liberia. AT A TIME WHEN the opposition should together, many political observers fear, the two groups are miles apart, going in to separate directions. FORMER PRESIDENT ELLEN Johnson-Sirleaf once said that no one political party or group can win on its own in Liberia – and she was right.
