Ganta, Nimba County – An international organization, Action Against Hunger, with funding from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) has donated a brand new Toyota Ambulance to the Ministry of Health through the Nimba County Health Team. The donation was made at the Nimba County Health Team offices in Sanniquellie, Nimba County recently as part of efforts geared towards mitigating the spread of the virus and helping to contain it. Nimba County is among three selected counties (Montserrado, Margibi & Nimba) where the AFD emergency response to COVID-19 project is being implemented. She recounted Action Against Hunger support to the county health team prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus, including supporting the county health team on the nutritious project and UNICEF lead project. Nimba County Health Officer, Dr. Netty Joe expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Health for identifying Action Against Hunger to support the health team against COVID-19.

The initiative is under the auspices of the “Mobilizing Media to Fighting COVID-19 (MMFC) project” initiated by Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), a Canada-based charity organization. “When you do that then you have equipped yourselves adequately for robust reporting on human rights violations in the country,” he stated. “It is important that you draw a line as to how you are going to engage yourself in covering human rights issues. with that you will not narrow human rights reporting to just civil and political rights. Since 2002, Journalists for Human Rights have worked around the world to train and engage local journalists, media outlets, civil society organizations and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen and improve human rights coverage in local contexts.

The grant is intended to support the policy unit team at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, under the Liberia Economic Policy Dialogue Activity (LEPDA) project, which is funded by USAID. Flomo said it is important for technicians to have the right tool in order to deliver on their mandate, adding that the policy unit team has the required competence. He thanked the People of America for providing Liberia with the in-kind grant, which will enhance the work of the (PUT) to deliver on its mandate. “We remain grateful to the American people for providing us the in-kind grant to deliver on our mandate”. Wilson noted that the timeline of the grant is three months, starting from May 17 to August 16 2021.

wMonrovia – Liberia Football Association first Division Club Monrovia Club Breweries have booked their place in the final of the Petro Trade Cup despite a 2-2 drew against semifinal rivals LISCR FC. Meanwhile, Watanga FC also edged past Nimba County based side Nimba Kwado to claim their finalists’ spot. Watanga FC advanced to the cup final on Wednesday— winning 1-0 at home and 4-2 on aggregate. The Bushroad Island side will play Paynesville based Watanga FC in the final on May 23 at a venue to be announced by the Liberian football Association and the sponsor Petro Trade. The winner of the Petro Trade Cup will represent Liberia in the Confederation of Africa Football Cup.

The victim, identified as one Moses Jallah, is a staff of Customs and works with the anti-smuggling unit of the LRA. Mr. Jallah was attacked around 8pm, on Monday, May 10. According to family sources, Mr. Jallah has been stabilized and is currently receiving treatment at a local health facility. The LRA further empathized with the family and wishes Mr. Moses Jallah speedy recovery. Fear has reportedly gripped employees of the LRA and other anti-graft institutions in Liberia following the latest incident involving Anti-Smuggling Officer Moses Jallah of the LRA.

Capitol Hill, Monrovia – Several members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday were left astounded by Speaker Bhofal Chambers’ unilateral decision to abruptly adjourn the session due to power failure at the Capitol. During Tuesday’s session, the plenary was almost set to reach a quorum as per the House’s rules, but Speaker Chambers called for the session to be adjourned. “When he [Speaker Chambers] sees that there are some critical communications coming on the floor that will bring heated argument, he delays those communications so that they will perpetually die. He said it was time for Speaker Chambers to ensure session time is strictly adhered to. He noted that the presiding officer should asked plenary to decide whether to adjourn or not due to the power outage.

David Korboi, Jr., reportedly the ringleader of the gang was arrested based on the cooperation of Lamie J.J. Dennis, one of the suspects initially arrested by the Liberia National Police. Dennis, 38, is the brother of the landlord of one of the men who was brutalized. The Liberia National Police continue to remain tightlipped on the status of the investigation. The country has not defined its stance on the protection of the rights of its LGBT population. With the election of President Joe Biden who promised protection of LGBT people worldwide, the Liberian gay community continues to remain hopeful.

According to him, the failure of the staff of the COVID Testing Center to give his daughter her COVID-19 Testing reference number has caused his family to incur more than US$800 extra expenses. Younger Fasuekoi, the daughter of the longtime Liberian journalist and owner and Manager of Fazee Restaurant in the U.S. came along with her father to Liberia on a vacation. After booking her ticket with Air France, Younger went to the testing center at Sophie in Congo Town to do her COVID-19 test as required before leaving Liberia. On May 5, Younger went back and did her COVID-19 test with the charged fee of US$75 – all of that was done stipulated time to avoid embarrassment, she said. After running her test, she was not given her covid-19 reference number by staff from the testing center.

Gbartala, Bong County – Deborah Gonkpah, a fellow of SHE-CAN, a United States-based non-profit organization that is building women’s leadership in post-conflict countries, has constructed two pit latrines for residents of Gbartala in Bong County. Valued at over US$ 600, the latrines will will serve over five hundred residents. Gonkpah also said her decision to construct latrines for residents of Gbartala is to discourage the traditional and unhygienic practice of defecating in bushes or open fields. She encouraged residents of Gbartala to wash their hands with soap before meals and after using the toilets, inorder to prevent diarrhoea and cholera. SHE-CAN is a US-based non-profit that is building women’s leadership in post-conflict countries.

MONROVIA – A General Auditing Commission (GAC) findings have uncovered several discrepancies and unorthodox financial practices in the application of the Nimba County Development Fund in the tone of US$800,000.00. The audit report covers fiscal years 2011 to 2013. In the GAC audit, it was discovered that during the fiscal period 2011/2012 and 2012/2013, the Nimba County Administration received the amount of US$800,000.00 development fund with an operating bank account balance of US$ 2,239,835.08. According to a summary report provided by the Legislature Public Account committee (PAC), the County received US$200,000.00 as County Development fund. The Audit report also states that the cash position was verified from the SDF bank statement for Nimba County social development fund’s account obtained from LBDI.

The LNRCS was created by an act from the Legislature with the aim of helping vulnerable people in difficult circumstances at all times. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the head office in the preparedness of this year World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2021, the president of the LNRCS said having given birth to the Liberian Red Cross Society years back, it is the obligation of the government to support and provide pieces of advice to the institution. The president of the Liberian Red Cross added that there is a situation of Ivorian refugees coming into the coming and they are in dire need but there is no support to go such a distance to take care of the refugees. “But one the thing that has not changed over the past years is the support provided by the Liberian Red Cross Volunteers who are in communities every day helping with awareness-raising and promotion of hand washing, and encouraging community people on the use of facemask.
