MONROVIA – Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has expressed regrets and disappointment over the poor state and lack of economic and infrastructural developments in Bomi which once immensely contributed to the country’s national budget over the years. Though former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives Alex Tyler hailed from Bomi, citizens and residents of the county continue to suffer from the lack of basic social services. Senator Snowe wondered while Bomi which has given so much to national governments in the past continues to linger behind. Speaking further, Senator Snowe commended Bishop Sanogo for the kind gesture to the government and citizens of Bomi. He used the occasion to call for unity among sons and daughters hailing from Bomi if the county is to be on par with out counties across Liberia.

For President Weah, who trimmed his own salary by 25% upon assuming office, and further reduced his salary again during the harmonization exercise. For now, the only thing probably standing in the way of President Weah and a second term, is himself – and those in his inner circle. The chatters surrounding the pair has led to unending rumors that President Weah is contemplating dropping the vice president for his second quest for the presidency. Three years into our first term, we have come back to tell you thank you for your votes,” President Weah said. During the year under review, Minister Kemayah’s reign was eclipsed and muddled in accusations from the get go.

It is only made complicated when people stray far away from time-tested principles that strengthen the governance process. Furthermore, institutional processes and regulatory provisions that force a particular outcome must be calculated, planned, organized in a targeted faction, and aggressively enforced. Effective public sector governance and developmental finance can promote economic transformation that strengthens the institutional process. GIZ has trained several national stakeholders to counter the movement of illicit minerals, terrorist financing and money laundering, as well as illicit financial flows, within the Artisanal Smallscale Miners sector of Liberia. The joint training of national stakeholders is part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) due diligence guidance for responsible minerals supply chains and EU conflict minerals regulations, terrorist financing, money laundering, and illicit financial flows. The issue of smuggling of gold and diamond was high on the discussion, with emphasis on how to handle the movement of those minerals before it falls into the hands of terrorists. Liberia is a mineral-rich country, especially gold and diamond, but the proliferation of mining activities, coupled with illicit mining has made most of the minerals to be smuggled out of the country. This EU-funded training, which is being implemented by GIZ, was held in partnership with Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), LIS, LNP, German Corporation, and the Mano River Union (MRU).
