Monrovia – The Financial Intelligence Unit of Liberia (FIUL) has taken its fight against money laundering and other financial crimes to another level following the confiscation and subsequent turnover of US$284,000 to the Government of Liberia. The FIU then launched an investigation in line with its mandate and based on reasonable suspicion of money laundering reinforced by findings of preliminary investigations, a freezing order was placed on all the company’s accounts in Liberia. In collaboration with the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), the said amount was recovered representing tax liabilities of the Company. “The FIUL commends the government of Liberia for its demonstrated will to tackle money laundering and at the same time appreciates the public confidence reposed in the FIUL. The National Strategy and Action Plan seeks to mitigate the risks identified in the National Risk Assessment (NRA) 2019 report to make Liberia free of terrorist financing and money laundering to enhance investment and development.

Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence was among those expelled from the office Political Leader/Legislative Caucus Member. As such, she is not authorized to act on behalf of the LP with the Commission. Congo Town – The National Commission on Disabilities (NCD) over the weekend launched an initial US$250,000 empowerment project for people living with disabilities. Report by Jaheim T. TumuThe empowerment project is a US$500, 000.00 government initiative that is aimed at improving and sustaining the livelihood of persons living with disabilities across Montserrado County. Daintowon Domah Pay-Bayee, said persons living with disabilities should be joyful as the government made funds available to get them off the streets. Also making a remark, the head of persons with disabilities in rural Liberia, Sekou Neah, said that he’s glad for such a project that has never happened within the disabled community. Mr. Neah praised Madam Pay-Bayee for ensuring that the disabled community received such support.

MONROVIA – The head of the National Identification Registry, J. Tiah Nagbe has been called for questioning for allegedly issuing national ID cards to residents of Maryland County free of charge. The National Identification Registry (NIR) is responsible for issuing a digital identity in Liberia to among other things, help the country’s economic and social development. In his communication, Rep. Roland stated that the NIR cannot continue to cry for budgetary support while its Executive Director is at the same time issuing national ID card free of charge. Meanwhile, the lawmaker’s request was granted and Mr. Nagbe will appear before the House right after the Independence Day break. Formal receptions were held in his honor at the William V.S Tubman University in Harper and Jacksonville Township respectively; all in Electoral District #1, Maryland County.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – The Liberian delegation to the annual pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia has arrived safely. According to a dispatch from the Embassy of Liberia in Riyadh, a special flight conveying 127 pilgrims from Liberia landed safely at the King Adul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The flight took off from the Roberts International Airport Wednesday concluding attempts to ensure Liberia was represented at annual pilgrims to the Holy City. The pilgrims were received on arrival by officials of the Embassy as well as an array of Saudi officials from the Ministry of Hajj and Ummurah of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Performing Hajj is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, and as such, every Muslim who has the financial means and good health is expected to perform hajj at least once in one’s lifetime.

Liberia’s senior national team comprising home-based players has moved to a camp at the George Weah Technical Center, ahead of their match against Senegal in the 2022 African Nations Championship. The Executive Protection Service (EPS) officer, Patrick Kollie, charged for shooting to death a civilian Valentine Johnson made his first appearance on July 6, at the Monrovia City Court to face his murder charge. The court records alleged that after the shooting incident, defendant Kollie immediately got in his White Hyundai Sedan vehicle and fled the scene in total disregardto the existence of human life. When the defendant reached the area, he allegedly came across some criminals who tried to molest him by impeding his movement, the court documents quoted the defendant. As soon as the criminals realized that the defendant had an arm, they took off to their heel and passed by an approaching motorbike, the court record alleged. “After the defendant realized that he had hit the wrong person, he (defendant Kollie) immediately got into his vehicle and speedily left the crime scene,” the record alleged.

If the narrative of abandoned projects is anything to go by, Rep. Kolleh might not get enough votes from the affected towns and villages. Many residents also expressed disenchantment at Rep. The Liberia National Police, Maryland County detachment, has arrested suspect Samuel Toe, a notorious criminal following a rigorous search launched in Pleebo, Maryland county. Samuel Toe was arrested on June 26 at around 5:00 p.m. Kaydor noted that suspect Toe is undergoing investigation by the crime services department of the LNP in the county.
