News: Dubai International Chamber facilitates Mars Food Industries’ entry into Ethiopian market, pioneering African expansion

This marks Mars Food Industries’ inaugural deal on the African continent, facilitated by the chamber’s support for exporting baby food products under its Miralac brand to Ethiopia. According to the press release by the Dubai International Chamber, “the collaboration culminated in a commercial cooperation agreement between Mars Food Industries and Tana Ekt Trading, with Dubai Chambers catalyzing this milestone.”“With the first shipment already en route to Ethiopia, Mars Food Industries remains poised for further expansion across Africa, supported by the Dubai International Chamber’s office in Addis Abeba,” reads the press release. The Dubai International Chamber presently maintains seven representative offices across the African continent, including in Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana, and Kenya.

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission says 45 civilians killed by government forces in Amhara region
The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) claimed on Tuesday that federal security forces have killed at least 45 civilians in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. The independent state body also alleged that the civilians had been killed for being supposedly affiliated with the ethnic Amhara armed group known as Fano. Fano emerged as a resistance group in 2015, claiming to fight against the alleged genocide happening against the Amhara people. After the end of the civil war with TPLF, the government headed by Ethiopian President Abiy Ahmed failed to continue their alliance with Fano. The US also called for an investigation into the alleged murder of civilians in the Amhara region on Friday.

Families continue to flee capital as new bout of gang violence grips Haiti
Haiti which is recovering from a recent spate of violent demonstrations demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister, grapples with violence once again. Hundreds of families have been steadily leaving their homes under heavy shootouts since Sunday as rival gangs fight for control of the capital Port-au-Prince. Onne Monday (Feb. 12), a fresh bout of gang violence had driven new families out of their homes. "They burned houses we don't know if our house was burned. “At least 806 people, not involved in the in the violent exchanges taking place, were killed, injured, or kidnapped in January," Marta Hurtado said.

Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., giving a victory speech Tuesday night in a special election for a vacant House seat once held by former Republican Rep. Egypt: at least 15 dead in a road accident in Alexandria
A truck crashed into several passenger vehicles in the Mediterranean province of Alexandria, Egypt, killing at least 15 people, the authorities announced on Wednesday. The accident, which occurred late on Tuesday in the district of Amreya, west of the city of Alexandria, also injured eight people, according to a police report. The truck crashed into four microbuses, a type of public transport minibus widely used in Egypt, according to the report. Ambulances rushed to the scene of the accident and transported the injured to hospitals, according to local media. Road accidents claim thousands of victims every year in Egypt, where transport safety leaves much to be desired.

Eminent literary and film scholar Dr. Clyde Taylor dies at 92
“We live in days of Great Change, a shuffling of status and symbols,” Dr. Clyde Taylor wrote in 1973. That strong voice of the Black liberation movement took a final breath on January 24. Born Clyde Russell Taylor on July 3, 1931, in Boston, he was the youngest of eight children of his parents, Frank and E. Alice (Tyson) Taylor. It was there that he met several Black literary and political activists, including Toni Morrison and Amiri Baraka. Two years later, Taylor moved to San Francisco and married Martella Wilson.

In the aftermath of a brutal two-year war that has scarred the Tigray region, Shewit and her sisters, who reside in a rented one-bedroom house, stand as a testament to resilience amidst despair. Students in the Tigray region are among the hardest hit by the drought. According to him, among the 23,000 students enrolled at 46 elementary and secondary schools in the district, 4,449 have dropped out. This adjustment is necessitated by the impracticability of accommodating students beyond the 5th grade due to such constraints. According to these experts, an additional 522 schools in the region remain under the control of Eritrean and Amhara forces, rendering them inaccessible to students in the region.

Rights groups says Ethiopian soldiers killed civilians in Amhara region
Ethiopia’s human rights watchdog says at least 45 people were killed during door-to-door raids by federal security forces in the country’s northern Amhara region in in late January. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Tuesday confirmed the identity of the civilians who is says “were extrajudicially killed by government security forces for allegedly ‘supporting Fano’”. This comes after months of clashes last year between the military and the ethnic Amhara militia, which describes itself as a “self-defence” organisation and draws volunteers from the local population. Both the United States and the European Union have called for an investigation into the killings in the town of Merawi. The Amhara violence is Ethiopia’s most serious crisis since the signed of a peace agreement in November 2022 that ended a two-year conflict in the neighbouring Tigray region.

Ethiopia: The government proposes to include Amharic among the official languages of the African Union
The Ethiopian government has proposed to include Amharic among the official languages recognized by the African Union (AU). A former ambassador to the United Nations, Selassie previously served as Ethiopia's ambassador to Egypt. Last August, violent fighting broke out in the Amhara region between the regional "Fano" militias and federal troops, following the refusal of the Amhara militias to disband and integrate the ranks of the federal army as required by the Pretoria peace agreement. The condition was one of the prerequisites for the end of the war in Tigray, which lasted from the end of 2020 to the end of 2022, during which the Amhara militias supported Prime Minister Ahmed's army. The Africa Financial Industry Summit-AFIS and Deloitte unveiled the third edition of their African Financial Industry Barometer, which highlighted significant progress and persistent challenges in the African financial industry. Based on an in-depth survey to be carried out in the second half of 2023, the barometer offers insights on Africa’s progression towards building a world-class financial industry. An overwhelming 95% of financial industry leaders are optimistic about the economic outlook over the next three years in spite of macroeconomic uncertainties and tensions in financial markets.
