A series of drone attacks that occurred last Sunday in the Kawot and Molale districts of the North Shewa area, in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, caused the death of numerous civilians. The attack, according to the same sources, caused four victims, while five others were injured, including three teachers and a senior school assistant. Other sources cited by broadcaster “Deutsche Welle” indicate that the death toll at the school may have been higher, with seven teachers killed according to some eyewitnesses. In recent weeks several press sources had reported that Ethiopia is deploying an additional number of troops along the road that connects the northern city of Humera to the Eritrean city of Omhajer. In the event of Ethiopian intervention to dismantle the provisional Amhara government in the west, the sources note, the Amhara militias could seek an escape route from Eritrea or obtain military support from Eritrea.

By Evan Perez, CNN(CNN) — The US Justice Department on Tuesday notified Boeing that it breached terms of its 2021 agreement in which the company avoided criminal charges for two fatal 737 Max crashes. The earlier deal had resolved a fraud investigation related to the company’s development of its 737 Max aircraft. Under its deferred prosecution agreement from January 2021, Boeing paid $2.5 billion in penalties and promised to improve its safety and compliance protocols. In April 2023, Boeing announced its supplier used a “non-standard manufacturing process,” delaying deliveries of the 737 Max. In March, the FAA identified more potential safety issues with the engines of the 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner.

The news comes after reports that the DOJ had been investigating Boeing’s compliance with the agreement in recent months following the January in-flight blow-out of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9’s door-plug. “For failing to fulfill completely the terms of and obligations under the [agreement], Boeing is subject to prosecution by the United States” for criminal violations, the letter adds. “The government is determining how it will proceed in this matter.”Boeing denies it violated the agreement but commits to co-operating with the DOJ. Boeing added MCAS to the 737 Max to counter the jet’s tendency, due to its larger engines, to pitch nose-up during certain circumstances. The company in 2021 agreed to pay $2.5 billion and to ensure its compliance with federal laws in exchange for the DOJ deferring prosecution of the criminal charges.

"For failing to fulfill completely the terms of and obligations under the DPA, Boeing is subject to prosecution by the United States for any federal criminal violation," Justice Department officials wrote in the letter. The letter argued that investigators are no longer bound by the 2021 agreement and are "not limited" in their probe into the aircraft manufacturing giant. Last month, families of some of the 737 Max crash victims met with Justice Department officials for an update on the case against Boeing. Robert A. Clifford, another attorney representing family members of victims of one of the 737 crashes, said in a statement, "This is a way for Boeing to be held criminally responsible in court. The Justice Department declined to comment further when reached by CBS News.

Boeing has violated a settlement that allowed the company to avoid criminal prosecution after two deadly crashes involving its 737 MAX aircraft, the Justice Department told a federal judge on Tuesday. It is now up to the Justice Department to decide whether to file charges against the aircraft maker amid increasing scrutiny over the safety of its planes. Prosecutors will tell the court no later than July 7 how they plan to proceed, the Justice Department said. Boeing reached a $2.5 billion settlement with the Justice Department in January 2021 to avoid prosecution on a single charge of fraud – misleading regulators who approved the 737 MAX. “The Government is determining how it will proceed in this matter,” the Justice Department said in the court filing.

A research led by the Center for Information Resilience has discovered that most Ethiopian women face targeted abuse and hate speech on Facebook, Telegram, and X. According to the report, the impact of the cyber-bullying is so strong that many of these women will rather stay away from all forms of public life, both online and offline, than risk experiencing it. The study discovered over 2,000 hateful words in English and three Ethiopian languages – Amharic, Tigrigna, Afan Oromo, used against women. Felicity Mulford, an editor and researcher at CIR, believes the study’s finding can be used by human’s rights advocates as well as women rights advocates in their advocacy. SOURCE: VOA NEWSShare
