Bangladesh’s president dissolved parliament Tuesday, clearing the way for new elections to replace the longtime prime minister who resigned and fled the country following weeks of demonstrations against her rule that descended into violent unrest. The streets of Dhaka appeared calmer Tuesday, with no reports of new violence as jubilant protesters thronged the ousted leader’s residence. The prime minister had called the protesters criminals and said they should be treated with an iron hand. Over the weekend, protesters called for a “non-cooperation” effort, urging people not to pay taxes or utility bills and not to show up for work. The weekend of violence left dozens of people dead in the predominantly Muslim nation of over 160 million people.

Nearly two decades since the onset of their track rivalry, Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele return to the city where it all began for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 37-year-old is chasing more history in Paris in 2024, and wants to become the first athlete to win three back-to-back Olympic marathon titles. The two haven't raced each other since 2018, when Kipchoge won the third of his fourth London marathon titles. Talking of times, Kipchoge is the fastest man alive in the absence of the world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, a fellow Kenyan who lowered the World Record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Kiptum, who had been preselected to the Paris 2024 marathon team, died in a car crash last February.

A human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has cautioned protesters to avoid “undemocratic forces” using the nationwide hunger protest to call for a military coup in the country. Falana’s statement follows reports on Sunday of protesters in Kano State waving Russian flags and chanting in Hausa, “We don’t want a bad government.”While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protests (sections 39 and 40), Falana called on #EndBadGovernance protesters to reject undemocratic forces hijacking the movement to promote violence or a military coup. He said: “While we support the rights of the #EndBadGovernance protesters, we have a patriotic duty to call on them to distance themselves from undemocratic forces who have taken advantage of the peaceful protests to engage in violence or campaign for a military coup in the country. “It has become necessary to point out that calling for a military coup or waving the flag of Russia, a country known for supporting unconstitutional changes of government in Africa, constitutes a gross abuse of the constitutional right to protest against the government of Nigeria. “The legitimate protests against hardship in the land should not be turned into a campaign for an unconstitutional change of government.”The legal luminary further cautioned those advocating military rule, warning that they may face charges of treasonable felony in violation of Section 41 of the Criminal Code.
