CAIRO – 3 March 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry criticized Ethiopia's intransigence and neglect to the principle of good neighboring, which has pushed Egypt to suspend negotiations aimed at reaching a legally binding agreement on the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Shokry's made the statements Sunday in the second Egypt-GCC Consultative Meeting held in Riyadh as he updated his counterparts on the dispute pertinent to the dam. Minister Shokry also tackled the critical crisis the region is enduring due to the Gaza War. He warned of the disastrous consequences of the intended Israeli ground operation in Palestinian Rafah on regional security. The discussions also included threats to navigation in the Red Sea, and the conflicts in Libya, Sudan, Syria, and Somalia.

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) announced that the banking sector allocated nearly EGP 2bn to support social and developmental projects in 2023, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy. The projects aimed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and align with Egypt’s Vision 2030. The banking sector also spent EGP 274.3m on community welfare, EGP 21.3m on rural and slum development, EGP 57.4m on supporting people with disabilities, and EGP 27.3m on women empowerment. Additionally, the Egyptian banks supported entrepreneurship and SMEs with EGP 22.8m, environmental projects with EGP 29.5m, and sports, arts, and culture with EGP 30.8m, among other community initiatives. The CBE reaffirmed that the banking sector will continue to support national initiatives that aim to help the most vulnerable segments and improve society.

CAIRO - 2 March 2024: Al-Qahera News TV Channel reported Saturday that 11 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid that targeted a tent allocated for displaced Palestinians west of Rafah City, south of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli occupation forces have continued their aggression against the Gaza Strip by land, sea and air since the seventh of last October, resulting in the martyrdom of more than 30,000 Palestinians. Most of the killed Palestinians are children and women. The Israeli aggression has also led to more than 71,000 injuries. And while more than 8,000 are still missing under the rubble and on the roads, the occupation prevents ambulance crews from reaching them.

The two-day event, held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, brought together a wide range of stakeholders in the medical tourism industry. He indicated that the size of the global healthcare market, according to the Medical Tourism Magazine, exceeds the gross domestic product of some giant countries like Japan, Germany, or India. Additionally, according to the Medical Tourism Association (MTA), millions of people around the world cross their national borders and travel to other destinations to receive healthcare. He further explained that medical and wellness tourism is a fertile ground for foreign direct investment, as it is one of the essential services.

Al-Masry appreciated the efforts of the Egyptian Red Crescent, which is ‘making redoubled efforts’ in providing and organizing the entry of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian peopleThe General Commissioner of the Tribes revealed that, through his communication with the concerned authorities in Egypt, he sensed that they were extremely keen and searching for all means in attempts to bring humanitarian aid and medical supplies to the people in the Gaza Strip. Al-Masry added that Egyptian efforts did not stop at supporting the rights of the Palestinian people in international forums and mobilizing international public opinion to support the Palestinian people. Rather, Egypt opened its doors to the passage of humanitarian and relief aid to the people of Gaza, victims of the criminal Israeli aggression, and provided about 80% of the aid directed to the people in Gaza along with establishing a number of camps to shelter the displaced, and field hospitals. Al-Masry confirmed that the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip ‘highly appreciate the sincere Egyptian efforts’ to provide relief and shelter for the people in Gaza.

Furthermore, Al-Arish Airport in North Sinai has continued to receive planes transporting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip since October 12, 2023. The total number of planes that arrived at Al-Arish Airport in North Sinai has reached 622 planes, transporting aid to Gaza and official delegations since the start of the Israeli aggression on Gaza. The Egyptian Red Crescent received this aid and transported it from Al-Arish to the Gaza Strip. Gharib Abdel Hafez, spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces, confirmed on Thursday that Egypt and the UAE are continuing their joint efforts to airdrop tons of humanitarian aid onto the north of the Gaza Strip.

Moreover, the Biden administration is also dealing with Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has further reduced its involvement in the Middle East. Deepening commitments to the Middle East is unlikely to be a successful strategy for either American political party in a critical election year. The most urgent task at present, before even considering the post-war situation, is for the regional powers to pursue new and stronger regional security arrangements that can ensure stability. The Middle East needs to establish a permanent regional security forum that provides a lasting platform for dialogue among its actors. Although this vision may seem unrealistic today, the leaders in the Middle East have the power to end the cycle of violence and guide the region toward a more positive direction.

The Rwandan government has allocated $300m (382bn Rwandan francs) to a project aimed at mitigating flooding risks along the Mukungwa River, a tributary that feeds into Lake Victoria and ultimately the Nile River and the Mediterranean Sea. “This project aims to deploy various measures to mitigate flooding along the Mukungwa River,” explained Davis Bugingo, Manager of the Flood Management and Water Storage Division at the Rwanda Water Resources Board. Supported by the World Bank and coordinated by Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment, the VRP also involves collaboration with various government institutions, including the Rwanda Meteorology Agency, Rwanda Development Board, and Rwanda Forestry Authority. With a total financing requirement exceeding $300m, the VRP has secured support from partners such as the World Bank, European Investment Bank, Nordic Development Fund (NDF), and Climate Green Fund. The project is expected to span five years, with specific sections of the Mukungwa River benefiting from ecological measures that integrate eco-tourism initiatives.
