La Chine connaît une flambée épidémique depuis l'abandon de la politique zéro COVID après de forts mouvements de contestation au sein de la population, excédée après trois années de strictes mesures de restriction. Nos interventions sont dictées par la prudence et nous n'hésiterons pas à ajuster les mesures pour protéger la santé et assurer la sécurité de la population canadienne. Des passagers à l'aéroport Malpensa de Milan s'enregistrent avant un test de dépistage du coronavirus après que l'Italie eut ordonné des contrôles pour tous les voyageurs en provenance de la Chine. De plus, l'agence onusienne a indiqué avoir demandé davantage de données, entre autres sur les hospitalisations, les admissions dans les unités de soins intensifs et les décès liés au virus. Face à la diversité des réponses sanitaires de chaque pays, l'Europe prône une attitude concertée de ses États membres.

Ukrainian U-25 hockey team wins hearts and a standing ovation in 2-0 loss to U of S Huskies
The team's game against the Huskies is the first of four games against Canada West hockey teams, with matches set against university teams from Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg during the "Hockey Can't Stop Tour." A defencemen on the Ukrainian team said the team is excited to play in Canada, and for a very good reason. Barbara Chilcott was 99 when she died in Toronto on New Year’s Day 2022. We have only one passing to report for February 2022, but it was a shock when news broke on the 12th. He was a month shy of his 98th birthday when he died in Toronto on July 11, 2022. For his work on an episode of Wojeck, he was given a Canadian Film Award for Best Black-and-White Cinematography in 1967. As mentioned at the beginning of this year’s Passages, folk singer and songwriter Ian Tyson had died just a few days before the end of 2022.

Today in Canada’s Political History: Happy New Year from Art’s History and Mackenzie King!
It is a great pleasure to usher in the new year with readers of Art’s History. And speaking of relatively unknown Prime Ministers, I note that 2023 marks the 150th anniversary of Alexander Mackenzie becoming the first Liberal Prime Minister in Canadian history. To begin the year I am once again doing so with an assist from our longest-serving Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King. Over to you Mr. King and happy New Year’s from Art’s History. On January 1, 1894, future Prime Minister Mackenzie King was 19 and an idealistic university student.

Travellers from China to Canada will require proof of negative COVID-19 test as cases surge
On Dec. 31, the federal government announced it will require travellers coming from China to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test before their departure. Starting Jan. 5, the federal government will require air travellers arriving from China, Hong Kong or Macao to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test taken before their departure. The U.S., Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Italy have also announced testing requirements. Canada's temporary requirement will be in place for all travellers age two and older, regardless of nationality and vaccination status. After 30 days, the measures will be reassessed as more data and evidence emerges, according to PHAC.

Why Leafs’ $100,000 Boxing Day fine seems like a bargain
If the Maple Leafs identify a way to gain a perceived edge, they’re probably pursuing it. All indications suggest the players were comfortable with an evening flight to St. Louis on Boxing Day despite having the negotiated right to spend it at home instead. Some of them are even believed to have pushed for it in order to make Tuesday’s game day against the Blues as normal as possible and set themselves up for success. It’s about restoring a comfortable rhythm and regaining form as quickly as possible following a break that Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe noted is “disruptive” for all players. But in a season with so much riding on it — one where nothing can or should be left to chance — the Leafs can probably view the $100,000 dropped as money well spent.

She said connecting older adults to communities that are socially fulfilling is also important for one’s mental health and physical well-being.

Annual bird count encourages kids to flock to nature, conservation

The annual Christmas Bird Count is the longest-running citizen science project in North America, said Becky Parker, executive director of Nature Nova Scotia. The data is then submitted to a database that can help researchers track each bird species.
