Pluralist not Secular
The terms “non-religious” and “non-denominational” are germane. With their corollaries they mirror the state-scale definitions “secular” and “theocratic”. “Secular” is cabin luggage for stuffing with a whole variety of meanings, but the problematic “anti-religious” one predominates. This is understandable since modern ideas of fundamental community or national ethos have over the millennia been gradually, and incompletely, wrestled from the arms of theocracy. – Ed]So I am suggesting that we stop using “secular” and use “pluralist” instead.

Boeing invests $240M to create Montreal-area aerospace innovation zone
Boeing, a giant in the aircraft manufacturing business, is investing $240 million as part of a partnership with the Quebec government to create an aerospace innovation zone in the Montreal area. Premier François Legault, Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon unveiled the project Tuesday during an annual aerospace international forum held in Montreal. The innovation zone will have operations in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough and the cities of Longueuil and Mirabel. It will be called Espace Aéro and will be overseen by Aéro Montréal, an aerospace business strategy hub that aims to grow the industry in Quebec. The innovation zone would also be the fourth in the province.

Serial killer Robert Pickton in critical condition after prison assault
serial killer Robert Pickton has been hospitalized and is in critical condition after he was assaulted in prison on Sunday, Radio-Canada is reporting. The CSC said the injured inmate was taken out of the prison and moved to a hospital for treatment. Two sources, including one police source, confirmed with Radio-Canada that the unnamed, assaulted inmate is Robert Pickton. Authorities identified the assailant, who is another inmate, and appropriate actions have been taken, the CSC said in the statement. Pickton was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of full parole for 25 years.

Inflation cooled to 2.7% in April as food price growth slowed
Canada's consumer price index cooled to 2.7 per cent in April, down from 2.9 per cent in March, led by the slower growth of food prices, Statistics Canada said Tuesday. Though food prices still rose in April, they did so at a slower pace of 1.4 per cent compared to 1.9 per cent in March, the data agency said. The cost of meat mostly drove the decline, but other food products that also contributed were non-alcoholic beverages; bakery and cereal products; fruit, fruit preparations and nuts; and fish, seafood and other marine products. The Bank of Canada's preferred measures of core inflation, which strip volatile sectors like food and energy from the rate, also eased — a happy sign for the central bank, which will make its next interest rate decision on June 5. Many economists expect that the bank will start cutting rates at that meeting.
