Six weak banks have received Tk 16.40 billion in loans to resolve their liquidity crisis by three relatively stronger banks, reports bdnews24.com. Sonali Bank, Mutual Trust Bank, and Dutch Bangla Bank provided the support to First Security Islami Bank, Social Islami, Union Bank, Global Islami Bank, National Bank and Exim Bank. The deceased was Shahidul Islam, 50, hailed from Kurigram district. Local people said the accident occurred this morning in the Tiktikir Hat area on Fulbari-Barobari Road as a Votvoti (locally made three-wheeler) overturned. Shahidul Islam died on the spot. Conversely, Bangladesh repaid $1.126 billion in principal and interest during the same period, exceeding loan disbursements by nearly $280 million. The repayment amount was 33.14 percent higher than the disbursed foreign loans. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, Bangladesh received $9.86 billion in foreign loans but paid $3.36 billion in principal and interest.

Six additional deaths from dengue were reported in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday morning, bringing the total fatalities in Bangladesh this year to 247. During the period, 1,298 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), reports bdnews24.com. Of them, 242 dengue patients were admitted in hospital under Dhaka North City Corporation while 226 were hospitalized in Dhaka South City Corporation. Among the recent fatalities, four were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and one each in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Chattogram Division (excluding CC). A total of 49,880 dengue cases have been reported since January 1, 2024.

DHAKA, Oct 20, 2024 (BSS) - In a move to restore vision, cornea transplant, an operation to replace part of the cornea with corneal tissue, has been conducted on the eyes of two patients who were injured in the anti-discrimination student movement. The Seba Foundation-operating out of the USA and Nepal-has arranged the delivery of highly-sensitive corneal tissue to Bangladesh for emergency transplant procedures. The adviser said a significant number of common people including students who were injured during the anti-discrimination student movement are receiving treatment in various private and public hospitals. "A specialized dedicated care unit has been formed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for their better treatment. It has been ensuring maximum health care to the injured people," she added.
