News Desk :Two passengers on an autorickshaw have died after a truck ploughed into the CNG-run vehicle in Brahmanbaria. The incident occurred in the north Shuhilpur area on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway around 7am on Saturday, according to Khatihata Highway Police Station chief Akul Chandra Biswas, reports bdnews24.comAbdul Hai, 50, and Junayed, 27, identified with a single name, died after the collision. They were travelling to Khatihata from the district town alongside two others when the driver parked the vehicle on the side of the highway to pick up another passenger. A truck subsequently slammed into the stationary three-wheeler, killing Abdul Hai on the spot, according to witnesses. Three others were rushed to the 250-Bed General Hospital in Brahmanbaria, where Junayed passed away, the police said.

LINCOLN — Alexis Markowski was definitely a starter for the Nebraska women’s basketball team last season. Markowski averaged 11.9 points per game last season and is at 15.9 points this season. The junior center from Lincoln has cracked the top 20 for career scoring at Nebraska already in just three seasons — she’s 19th in the rankings with 1,259 points. Markowski attributes the 4-point jump in her scoring average to being a little more involved in the offense. Markowski has also been pretty consistent from game to game, scoring in double figures in 27 of 28 games (the exception being a blowout loss against Ohio State).

The Offshore Banking Bill 2024 has been introduced in parliament with an aim to bolster foreign exchange reserves and entice foreign investment amid a global economic crisis. Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali placed the Bill, and it was then sent to the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry for review and report within a day. Bangladesh has been operating offshore banking since 1985 under a finance ministry notification, despite the absence of a specific law. In 2019, the central bank introduced an offshore banking policy, followed by several notifications. Now, it is being enacted to formalise this practice.

Smoke and flames were observed at the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar after continuous loud explosions amid a violent conflict between the Myanmar military and rebels of the Arakan Army. Smoke was seen across the Hnila border in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf from 8am on Saturday. On the other side of the border are Balibazar and Nagakura Para in Myanmar. Hospitals in Bangladesh have admitted nine new dengue patients in a day, taking the tally of infections since Jan 1 to 1,407 after the worst outbreak last year. The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease remained unchanged at 17 with no fatality reported in the daily count published by the Directorate General of Health Services on Saturday. The new cases included four in Dhaka. The capital also accounted for 36 of the 66 dengue patients undergoing treatment at hospitals in the morning.

Five survivors of the deadly Bailey Road building blaze are still in a precarious state and will continue to undergo treatment at the hospital, according to Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen. However, six other patients receiving treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute have recovered sufficiently to be discharged, he said during a visit to the facility on Saturday, reports bdnews24.com. "As of this morning, 11 patients were undergoing treatment at the burn institute. Samanta Lal Sen also announced the formation of a 17-strong medical board to oversee the treatment of the injured. The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.

A woman has surrendered to the police after allegedly murdering her husband in Patuakhali. The suspect, 18-year-old Jinia Islam, stabbed 20-year-old Md Rakib Islam with a sharp object and strangled him using a piece of cloth during an argument on Friday, according to the police. She later went to the local police station and confessed to the murder, said Patuakhali's Additional Superintendent of Police Ahmed Moinul Hasan.
