LONDON, Jan 17, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - A protester who climbed onto the roof of Iran's embassy in London and removed a flag was arrested with several others, police said late on Friday, adding multiple officers were injured in the demonstrations. "During the ongoing protest at the Iranian Embassy this evening, a protester illegally accessed private property and climbed across multiple balconies onto the roof of the Embassy and removed a flag," the Metropolitan Police said in a post on X. "Several officers have suffered injuries," the UK capital's police added, saying in the "ongoing disorder" objects had been thrown at officers and "a number of people have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder". London police said last week they were deploying additional officers to "prevent any disorder" and protect the Iranian embassy. On Saturday last week, a protester briefly replaced the embassy's flag with a former flag flown before Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979.

VIENNA, Jan 17, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Russia and Ukraine on Friday agreed to a localised ceasefire to allow repairs on the last remaining backup power line at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the IAEA said on Friday. "This temporary ceasefire, the fourth we have negotiated, demonstrates the indispensable role that we continue to play," said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said its team at the site heard "a large number of explosions, including some within the vicinity of the site". Zaporizhzhia is the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe and has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022. Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused the other of risking a nuclear catastrophe by attacking the site.

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador, Jan 17, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Ecuador on Friday deployed 10,000 soldiers in three coastal provinces to fight drug-trafficking gangs blamed for a surge in violence in the once-peaceful country. President Daniel Noboa's government has vowed an iron-fist approach as the South American nation hits record levels of murders and other violent crimes. Hundreds of special forces soldiers were deployed Friday to "reinforce security operations" in the provinces of Guayas, Manabi and Los Rios, Air Force General Mario Bedoya told reporters. Ecuador is located between the world's two top exporters of cocaine -- Colombia and Peru -- and has seen a surge in violence by gangs linked to Mexican and Colombian cartels. Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo has instructed the military high command to operate indefinitely out of the port city of Guayaquil, where troops are inspecting seaports strategic for drug trafficking.

"I certainly don't think it's soulless," said Carrick, who won 12 major trophies during his decorated playing career with the Red Devils. "I think there's a magic around this place. Trump, again insisting the United States needed mineral-rich Greenland for its "national security", warned that he "may put a tariff" on countries that oppose that stance. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said there was "good dialogue" and stressed it was important to "nurture" ties between the United States, Denmark and Greenland. "The vast majority" of Americans do not agree that it is a good idea for the United States to acquire Greenland, she told reporters. - Demonstrations -Trump has repeatedly criticised Denmark -- a NATO ally -- for, in his view, not doing enough to ensure Greenland's security. Large demonstrations are planned across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday to protest against Trump's plan.

It is quite infuriating to see how Saint Martin’s Island is being destroyed not by ignorance, but by the reckless entitlement of the very public who claim to love it. Our only coral island and among the most treasured natural resources we have, declared an ecologically critical area for decades now, is now at the mercy of reckless tourism. When tourism was suspended for nine months in 2025, nature rebounded. Conservation works but only if given priority and Saint Martin’s cannot sustain the thousands who descend on it during peak season. Unchecked tourism has already caused too much damage to Bangladesh’s natural beauty, and if we do not get serious about addressing it through stricter regulations, we risk losing these scenic destinations forever.

Women empowerment: Guarantee equal pay, safety, education, and leadership opportunities. Guarantee equal pay, safety, education, and leadership opportunities. BNP’s credibility will hinge on whether these commitments are communicated with precision and backed by actionable timelines.

At least, that is how people outside viewed the Indian Cricket Board decision. Understandably, a deeply anguished Bangladesh Cricket Board took the decision not to play in Indian cities (two) in the upcoming T20 series citing security concerns. This decision of course was a serious concern to the International Cricket Council (ICC), the organizer of the T20 World Cup. It asked its security team to assess the threat situation and guide their decision on Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request. In support of his decision, he cited three risk factors, quoting from an alleged letter from the ICC Security Team.
