Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Central Bank (BCRA) President Santiago Bausili’s economic announcements on Friday were not what the market expected. Stock market dollars soared: the CCL dollar climbed 4.6% to AR$1,412 per dollar, while the MEP climbed 3.7% to AR$1,413. The gap between these rates and the official dollar rate is now 55%. The “blend” dollar allows exporters to sell 80% of their dollars in the official market and 20% at the blue-chip swap rate. While seasonality comes into play, the loss in competitiveness and pressure due to the exchange rate are also contributing factors.

After a dreadful day one for Argentine tennis stars, Tomás Etcheverry put an end to the Argentine plight at Wimbledon, beating Italian Luca Nardi by 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in almost two hours of play on Tuesday. The tournament opener on Monday proved tough for Argentine tennis as all three debutants were eliminated, losing all eight sets played. Top ranked Argentine Sebastián Báez (18th ATP singles) had a manageable debut on paper, taking on U.S. player Brandon Nakashima (65). However, the Italian’s impressive serving record proved too much for the Argentine, who eventually lost 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in two hours and 26 minutes. Nadia Podoroska (65th WTA singles), one of only three Argentine representatives in the women’s singles draw, was the last to fall.

But its detractors argue that the legislation, in its anxiety to attract international investment, doesn’t do enough to help Argentina build reserves or develop local industry. The RIGI offers tax, customs, legal, and foreign exchange benefits for investments exceeding US$200 million. Corporate tax breaksInvestors with projects in the RIGI will pay 25% corporate income tax, instead of the current 35%, for thirty years. Under the RIGI, projects will be exempt from import duty on capital assets, machinery, and spare parts, and exempt from paying export duties for three years. The Argentine government tried to bring back mandatory registration for journalists but quickly backtracked following heavy criticism of Thursday’s announcement. “If you are a professional journalist you can obtain the National Registry of Journalists from the Secretariat of Labor, Employment and Social Security,” read an X post published Thursday morning by the Human Capital Ministry. The post included a link to the government website stating that the registration was mandatory and detailing the cumbersome procedure allegedly required for all professional journalists, cartoonists, translators, and proofreaders, among others. “Entire generations of journalists are not even aware of the rule and have never registered,” FOPEA said in a post on X. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday he believes his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei owes him and Brazilians an apology for having said “a lot of stupid things” about Brazil. The leftist Brazilian leader said in an interview with news outlet UOL that he has still not met Milei, a right-wing libertarian who took office in December, because he wants an apology first. Milei, an ally of far-right former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, attacked Lula several times during the Argentine politician’s successful presidential campaign last year, dubbing him an “angry communist” and “corrupt.”“I just want him to apologize,” Lula said. “Everything that President Lula intends, that’s fine, it’s among his wishes and we respect that, but the president [Milei] hasn’t done anything he should feel sorry for, at least so far,” Adorni said. Milei suggested during his campaign that he would balk at doing business with Brazil, which is Argentina’s top trade partner and the largest economy in Latin America.
