The Tokyo District Court held the first hearing Thursday on the government's request to issue an order to dissolve the controversial Unification Church over its aggressive donation solicitation practices. Questions also exist over ties between Japanese politicians and the South Korean religious group and its Japanese affiliate. Representatives of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the church attended the hearing that lasted for about an hour. Yamagami told the police his mother's vast donations to the church brought financial ruin to his family. The Unification Church was founded in South Korea by a staunch anti-communist in 1954.

In case you missed our old friend Patrick Lefevere's comments about Julian Alaphilippe, let me run it back for you. Yesterday, Patrick Lefevere made comments to the media about his employee, @alafpolak1. She added: "The recent public outburst by Patrick Lefevere, where he attacked Julian Alaphilippe in the media, was unprofessional. Behaviour like Mr Lefevere’s causes emotional and psychological harm. Should Mr Alaphilippe wish to take legal action against Mr Lefevere and Soudal Quick-Step for bullying at work we will support him in this endeavour."

She explained: “Previously, the market had mainly focused on motor fraud and now there’s an appetite to ensure other product lines are also being tackled in a similar way. “It’s critical that we continue to find new ways to detect fraud across all product lines. Key PointsHouthi attacks on shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb and Red Sea represent both an immediate threat to vital American interests in free trade and global commerce and a more general threat to American allies and interests in the Middle East. American air and missile strikes have somewhat diminished the frequency and lethality of Houthi attacks but appear unlikely to end the attacks altogether. Washington warned, punished, and warned the Houthis again against drone and missile attacks on vessels transiting the Red Sea. Since by all appearances the joint US-UK strikes on Houthi sites seem unlikely to stop the Houthi attacks, Washington will have to do more and better. Operation Prosperity Guardian, the multinational maritime task force announced on December 18 in response to the Houthi threat, seeks to protect ships from attacks by increasing the presence of naval assets in the waterway to better aid and defend commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea.

Two new but exceptionally rare Covid-19 vaccine side effects – a neurological disorder and inflammation of the spinal cord – have been detected by researchers in the largest vaccine safety study to date, reports theguardian.com. But a new rare side-effect, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis – an inflammation and swelling in the brain and spinal cord – was also identified in the data analysis as being linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine. Not only did the Australian study confirm acute disseminated encephalomyelitis as a rare side-effect, but the large amount of AstraZeneca-specific data also allowed them to detect a second new rare side-effect, known as transverse myelitis, or spinal cord inflammation. Prof Julie Leask, a vaccine expert at the University of Sydney, said it’s important to keep these findings in perspective and that a Covid infection increases the risk of some of these rare conditions “much more than a vaccine” does. She said the studies also confirmed that “our vaccine experts are paying attention to when vaccines lead to serious side-effects, and they’re acting on it”.

My book God Is Not a White Man: And other revelations was a finalist in the Michael Ramsey Prize. I wasn’t expecting the Chaplain General to hold up my book and recommend it to the generals before I spoke. I previously wrote about the spine of my bullet journal breaking for similar reasons (Diary, 18 August 2023). We cleared the diary and made space to read books individually, and spent a team day discussing three texts: Walter Brueggemann’s The Prophetic Imagination; Luke Bretherton’s newest, A Primer in Christian Ethics; and, alongside those, Acts 17. We don’t do FBI checks on people who want to be buried,” Dolan, the archbishop of New York, said during his podcast Tuesday. The priests at St. Patrick’s made a decision at the beginning of the service not to celebrate a funeral Mass but to conduct a funeral service with no Mass instead. “In a way, it’s redundant,” Cardinal Dolan said Tuesday. Cardinal Dolan expressed frustration Tuesday with criticism by some Catholics of the cathedral staff and his archdiocese. Why in the world our people out there still believe what the secular press reports is beyond me,” Cardinal Dolan said.

Penny Mordaunt said the Labour party had 'done damage' to the office of the speaker as more than 50 MPs signed a motion of no confidence in Sir Lindsay Hoyle. Mordaunt said it had fallen to the government to defend the rights of the Scottish National Party and added that the Labour party should reflect on the damage it had done to the office of the speaker. Dozens of lawmakers stormed out of Britain's parliament on Wednesday with tempers flaring as the three biggest political parties sought to outmanoeuvre each other over a vote on a ceasefire in Gaza.
