At last, a “King’s Speech” that the king himself might have written, at least in its bridge-building, planet-saving passages. On Wednesday, King Charles III formally opened Britain’s Parliament, presenting the priorities of Britain’s new Labour government, a center-left legislative agenda that chimes with some of his own cherished projects, from curbing climate change to cultivating close ties with the European Union. It was a stark contrast to last year, when Charles presented the agenda of the Conservative government, which included plans to expand oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. Critics said that was at odds with Britain’s “net zero” emissions goals; the Labour government has promised to end new oil and gas exploration. Nothing in the king’s demeanor suggested that he was any more enthusiastic speaking the words drafted for him by Prime Minister Keir Starmer than he was with last year’s speech, prepared by Mr. Starmer’s predecessor, Rishi Sunak.

I run a high street pizzeria with my wife and have been the victim of a significant fraud through the Uber Eats delivery platform, with £19,000 of our takings diverted to a rogue account. I only noticed when our Uber Eats payments inexplicably ceased in March. Uber Eats says I was tricked by a scammer and is refusing to refund me. GC, LondonWhen you contacted Uber Eats about this fraud, it dismissed you, telling you it was “sorry to hear that you have been the target of a phishing scam”. We asked Uber Eats to look at your case, and while it was not forthcoming on the details – you were desperate enough to threaten legal action – the missing £19,000 has been credited to your account.

A “hostage,” a search for explosives, heaps of royal jewels and a five-foot silver gilt mace. Welcome to the reopening of Britain’s Parliament, replete with ancient traditions and elaborate rituals, and infused with anticipation over the country’s newly elected Labour government. The restart of parliamentary business on Wednesday began with a speech by King Charles III, a significant ceremonial duty that sets out the government’s agenda. While it’s not the first time King Charles has presided over the ceremony — he delivered his first King’s Speech last November, and he delivered the Queen’s Speech on behalf of his mother, Elizabeth II, in 2022 — it is the first time his speech will herald a new party’s time in power. Despite the name, the speech was not written by the king, but by government officials.

Core inflation, which excludes energy and food prices, was expected to dip but remained at 3.5 percent in June. Traders reduced their bets on an August rate cut, giving it about a 35 percent chance.
