U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday, who was named to the federal bench by former President George H.W. Bush, struck the president’s legal complaint from the court’s docket in an order lambasting both Trump and his legal team for having brought it in the first place. Merryday noted that Trump’s 85-page complaint had alleged “only two simple counts of defamation” while taking a full eighty pages to get to the first count. In a statement, a spokesperson for the president’s private attorneys said Trump would “continue to hold the Fake News accountable through this powerhouse lawsuit against the New York Times, its reporters, and Penguin Random House, in accordance with the judge’s direction on logistics.”

The University of Leeds has moved up three places in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide following the recent success of moving up nine places, in the Guardian University Guide. A combination of leading research and a charming cosmopolitan city has seen the University of Bristol secure a place in the UK’s top 10 in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026. The influential rankings placed the University of Bristol among the UK’s leading institutions in a broad range of disciplines. Three Engineering courses rank in the top five, including first for General Engineering, 4th place for Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering and 5th for Civil Engineering. The University also achieved second place for Russian and Eastern European Languages and Animal Studies, and top five positions for Music, German, Social Policy, Dentistry, Education, and French. “Our rise into the UK’s top 10 is a testament to the dedication of our staff and students, and to our ambition to lead globally through innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.”

The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge were joint fourth – the first time neither have held a place in the top three in the 32 years the Times guide has been running. Last year Oxford was ranked third, and Cambridge had already been pushed to fourth. In The Guardian University Guide 2026 published last week, Oxford was ranked first and Cambridge third. The new league table ranks Imperial College London sixth, followed by the University of Bath, the University of Warwick, University College London and the University of Bristol.

Lancaster has been named ‘University of the Year in the Northwest 2026’ and also ranks in the UK top 15 within a new league table released today. The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026 ranks Lancaster 15th out of 130 in the UK with ten individual subject areas positioned in the Guide’s top ten, and including four subjects ranked among the top five nationally. The news comes on the back of recent league tables including the Guardian University Guide 2026, which ranked Lancaster as 14th out of 123 institutions, and The Complete University Guide 2026 (10th of 130).
