An Indian special court on Tuesday sent notorious financial scammer Prashanta Kumar Halder and five of his associates to jail. Better known as PK Halder, the scammer and his cohorts were produced before the Special CBI Court in Kolkata in the morning. The court sent them to jail as the police did not seek their further remand. The ED told the court on Tuesday that they had found 88 bank accounts belonging to Halder and his associates. The Bangladesh Security and Exchange Commission (BSEC) recently ordered the seizure of all market shares belonging to PK Halder’s companies.

The trip for these individuals would cost Rs170 million of the taxpayer’s money, a report published in The News said. The staff from Abdul Shakoor’s office includes five drivers, four security personnel, one cook and 11 secretaries and assistants. The News report quoted a ministry spokesperson as saying the staff of the ministry goes every year to help pilgrims during Haj. “Staff like drivers and gunmen are tagged along for help in works such as carrying luggage, etc,” the spokesperson said.

He said the department received over 8,000 applications for the provision of scholarships to non-Muslim students, studying in colleges and universities this year. Besides providing scholarships, the provincial department of Minorities Affairs is also developing, renovating and repairing the worship places like temples, churches, gurudwaras, graveyards and Shamshan Ghat. On the occasion, the Secretary of the Minorities Affairs Department Mr Mohammad Abbas Baloch said that the Sindh government has created the department for the welfare of minorities. At a time when the country is at the crossroads of political and economic turmoil, the need for a broad-based dialogue is a jiff of fresh air. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s desire to kick-start a national dialogue is well within the realm, and should walk the talk. A policy that should spell out economic and strategic hallmarks for the next decade or so, and one that should not be influenced or hampered with the change of political guard cannot be delayed any further. Their thrust to rewrite a new Charter of Democracy and a grand consensus on economic reforms is public discourse. This call for dialogue is part of One Nation, One Policy; and must go ahead in all humility.

Amid reports of prolonged power outages in the country, former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday said that the power load-shedding would be reduced to 3.5 hours from Tuesday (tomorrow).
