ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz Thursday asserted that the government is working day and night to improve country’s economic situation. She stated this while talking to journalists outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after hearing of her appeal in the Avenfield reference. Maryam said that they are not sitting idle and lamenting rather they have given a plan to the people and will deliver it. Pervaiz said that the reference had not clarified the roles of the accused and there was nothing against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz on the record. He added that even the top court had not declared Maryam Nawaz as dependent of her father.

A Saudi court has sentenced a Pakistani to three years in prison for chanting slogans against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his entourage, in Madina, during their maiden visit to Saudi Arabia late April this year. Tahir, among other pilgrims, was accused of misbehaving with the Pakistani delegation and chanting slogans at the Masjid during the premier’s visit. Later, he uploaded videos of the incident on social media. In this regard, DG Sports Punjab Javed Chohan and POA Secretary General Khalid Mahmood addressed a press conference here at National Hockey Stadium on Thursday. Addressing the press conference, Javed Chohan said the prime objective of the SBP’s doping awareness camp is to make aware Pakistan athletes, coaches, managers and team officials of the troubles of doping. Javed Chohan added that doping awareness camp would not be restricted to Punjab only. Sources said the IMF suspected that the Chinese IPPs might have been overcharging Pakistan and there was a need to reopen these deals. When contacted, Esther Perez, IMF’s Resident Representative, emphasised the need for equitable treatment of all power sector stakeholders due to the limited fiscal space. Due to the IMF’s objections, the government did not directly make payment of Rs50 billion to the Chinese IPPs last week. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced that the Chinese IPPs would be given Rs50 billion to ensure fuel supplies. Out of these, nearly 2,000MW of power plants had been shut last month due to the depletion of imported coal inventories.

Reports reveal that during the meeting PM Shehbaz Sharif stressed on the need for creating a charter of economy and that all the stakeholders should collaborate on formulating a framework for achieving economic growth. The PM is right in identifying the urgent need to enhance exports and agricultural yield which can be achieved through financial management. During the meeting ambitious growth targets were also discussed which is positive; however, it remains to be seen how achievable they are given the prevailing circumstances. While this was a positive initiative on part of the government to convene such a meeting, we have witnessed such huddles in the past as well. The meeting could have certainly benefited from the presence of micro-finance banks, CSOs, developmental economists, and most importantly, worker representatives.

ISLAMABAD -The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has installed various training camps at its different coaching centers since January this year to prepare athletes for the upcoming international events. The camps installed in Islamabad include weightlifting, taekwondo, para athletics and squash. There were 52 female players, 171 male players, 9 female coaches and 27 male coaches which also included international coaches. The athletes were being given full training in the morning and evening training sessions arranged as per international standards. The PSB hoped that these players would perform well in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Islamic Solidarity Games and South Asian Games.
