According to ANZ’s latest Property Focus, New Zealand’s house price crash is around two-thirds of the way through ANZ’s forecast 22% peak-to-trough decline. Ongoing falls in house prices are expected as “supply and demand dynamics continue to swing in favour of buyers”. House sales, which tend to lead prices by a few months, fell 6.2% m/m, with the trend still clearly southbound. All in all, the December housing data was practically a straight flush when it comes to the housing market pulse: momentum is still softening. On our outlook, house prices relative to household incomes are expected to improve (fall) beyond the levels that prevailed just before the pandemic, but not meaningfully (figure 3).

Annual inflation has remained at 7.2% in the December quarter, which is slightly higher than average forecasts, but there's evidence in the figures that the rate may be slowing. The RBNZ had been forecasting a domestic inflation rate of 7% as of December and an overall rate of 7.5%. Previously, the annual inflation rate hit a 32-year high of 7.3% for the June quarter of 2022 before dropping oh, so slightly to 7.2% as at the September quarter. In terms of the overall inflation figures Stats NZ said housing and household utilities was the largest contributor to the December 2022 annual inflation rate. Earlier in 2022 the annual rate of increase was running at over 18%.

If you want another excuse to visit Kmart, you're in luck, as its $24 saucepan has beaten brands costing more than $200 in Consumer NZ testing. A budget buy from Kmart priced at $24 came out on top, narrowly beating a pricey pan by Essteele, at $270. Consumer NZ test team leader James le Page said the Essteele's 3.8 litre pot was marketed as premium kitchenware and performed as expected. The $24 Kmart saucepan earned a total score of 90, while Essteele's saucepan came a close second, at 86. "In this instance, the $24 Kmart saucepan is made from stainless steel and has a durable handle – indicating not only that it will perform well, but it should also go the distance.

Wednesday, 25 January, 2023 - 11:58Less than three weeks to the biggest physical challenge of his life, the Due Drop Hope Challenge to raise money for youth counselling, Mike King is embarking on a gruelling "training session" in Blenheim. Glover was initially poised to swim 300 kilometers from New Brighton Pier to Whites Bay in Marlborough, but a weather bomb changed his plans. Now he has moved inland, and will attempt to swim 20 loops of Lake Rotoiti at St Arnaud. Each loop is approximately 20 kilometers, which means the young Marlburian will have to cover a whopping 400 kilometers to complete his latest challenge, which begins on January 28th and ends (hopefully) on Waitangi Weekend. In 2020, his "Black Dog Swim" saw him swim the 61.5 kilometers length of the Queen Charlotte Sound and back again, raising more than $60,000 for I Am Hope.
