Genesis Energy is to resume importing coal, as reduced gas supplies and increased demand add to the problems of keeping the lights on in future years. Energy Minister Simeon Brown and Resources Minister Shane Jones said it had been told that some large gas consumers were concerned about being able to secure gas contracts. Less gas will also mean more coal will be needed to keep the lights on." "The fact that we've had disruptiveness in the gas industry means we're now relying more on coal. Other than that, the market is going to continue, and I think Genesis should be on the honours list."

Now Stats NZ is opening up its plans for conduct of the 2028 census and beyond for public consultation. In the consultation document, Stats NZ says adopting the new approach means Stats NZ will prioritise using admin data sources to provide the data for the census. When admin data is not available or not high quality, it will collect the data using other means, such as surveying. Stats NZ says it will then focus on the detailed design of the new approach to census "in continued collaboration with key customers, partners and communities". There will also be a second round of public consultation, seeking more detailed feedback, in 2025.

Official figures show Māori are disproportionately affected by family violence, sexual violence and violence within whānau. Consequently, the knock-on pressure on the kaimahi Māori and kaupapa Māori service provider workforce working with whanau living with violence is unprecedented. This prompted Te Pūkotahitanga — an independent ministerial advisory group advising Children’s Minister Karen Chhour — to make it a work programme priority. An unregulated family violence and sexual violence workforce within the sector adds to the complexity. The survey will be available until June 30 at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B5GFWZDThere will be a regional hui facilitated by Te Pūkotahitanga to explore face to face with kaimahi into the survey further.

Photo / NZMEPower generator Genesis Energy expects to be buying coal again by the end of this year, in part due to a quickly diminishing gas supply. Genesis said it aimed to maintain its solid fuel stockpile “to keep the lights on” for its customers through the “yo-yo” effects of the energy transition away from carbon dioxide emission. Photo / NZME“The outlook is that we will use more solid fuel over the next two years than we forecast,” he said. Genesis plans to maintain the coal stockpile at 350,000 tonnes - or about 670 GWh of electricity. The solid fuel stockpile will fall below 350,000 tonnes by the end of winter and this will trigger a need to order more solid fuel deliveries to maintain the target operational stockpile ahead of the winters of 2025 and 2026.

PHOTO: STEPHEN JAQUIERYThreats of vigilante justice have prompted Dunedin police to call for calm, following claims a man was filming children and "flashed" a gun while trying to abduct a child from a Mosgiel park recently. However, people took to social media over the weekend to complain about how long it was taking police to apprehend the culprit and some were threatening to take the law into their own hands. The incident was reported to police on April 14, but several other people on the social media website said they also witnessed the incident and believed it was not a one-off. "I’m going to the Mosgiel park today. "Like with any crime, you should report it to police rather than commenting on social media.
