The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) reported yesterday that it led a team from the Electrical Interconnection Committee between Libya and Southern European countries in a high-level meeting in Rome last Friday 2 February. Pursuant to the Libyan Italian MoUIt said the meeting comes pursuant of what was stated in the memorandum of understanding that was signed between Libya and Italy for cooperation in several fields, including electrical interconnection between the two countries. It also comes specifically, it added, in continuation of the discussions related to the Libyan-Italian electrical interconnection proposal. The meeting was attended on the Libyan side by: Osama Al-Darrat, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy Affairs and Chairman of the Electrical Interconnection Committee between Libya and Southern European Countries, and Abdul Salam Al Ansari, Chairman of REAoL and member of the Connectivity Committee, and Aseel Artema, Chairman of the Renewable Energy Holding Company and member of the Liaison Committee. The Chairman of the Electrical Interconnection Committee, REAoL added, stressed the necessity of intensifying the holding of these meetings and invited the Italian side to attend the next meeting that will be arranged in Libya.

The Libyan Asset Recovery and Management Office (LARMO) reported today that it had held a meeting with the Tripoli based Libyan Air Force last Thursday (1 February). The meeting, LARMO reported, comes pursuant to implementing the memorandum of understanding it had signed with the Libyan Air Force. During the first 11 months of 2023, the value of Egyptian exports to Libya increased to record $1.6 billion, compared to $1.1 billion during the same period in 2022, an increase of 48 percent. The most important commodities that Egypt exported to Libya during 2023 are: ceramics and stones worth $322.5 million, plastics worth $145.8 million, fuel and oils worth $123.4 million. According to the data, the value of Egypt’s imports from Libya reached $61.7 million, compared to $85.5 million during the same period in 2022, a decrease of 28 percent. The most important commodities that Egypt imported from Libya during 2023, Iron and steel valued at $39.2 million, and inorganic chemical products worth $15.3 million. The value of Libyan investments in Egypt recorded $19.9 million during the FY 2022/2023 compared to $19.3 million during the FY 2021/2022, an increase of 3.1 percent.

This came during a parliamentary today in Benghazi, headed by the First Deputy Speaker of the House, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi. The city of Zliten, located in western Libya, has been experiencing a strange phenomenon for years: groundwater gushing upwards to damage buildings and agricultural land. Observers believe that the artificial river has increased the groundwater reserves on the coast, which caused cracks in the earth’s layers. The Minister of Economy and Trade, Mohamed Al-Hwej, met last Tuesday (30 January) with business owners and Egyptian companies participating in the activities of the Libya Food Exhibition, in the presence of the Chairman of the Privatization and Investment Board (PIB), the Chairman of the General Authority for Exhibitions, the Minister’s Advisor, and the President of the Libyan-Egyptian Chamber of Commerce. Libya’s state National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced yesterday that, Mellitah Oil and Gas Company was able to rehabilitate well A75 in the Abu Attifel field leading to an initial production rate of 4,000 bpd. This was up from its previous rate of 781 bpd. The NOC said Mellitah carried out re-perforation and extension operations for the productive layers, to reach the new initial productivity results. The NOC said this initiative comes as part of the implementation of its strategic plan to increase production.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has facilitated the voluntary return of 327 migrants from Libya to Nigeria on January 30th. According to a statement released by the IOM today, the migrants, who include 226 females and 101 males, arrived in Lagos on board two voluntary humanitarian return charter flights from Tripoli and Benghazi. “Throughout the flight, 21 passengers with medical needs received attentive care from dedicated Medical escorts,” IOM said.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has banned temporarily the importation of live cattle, buffaloes, and their products and by-products from Libya and three other countries. This is to prevent the spread of lumpy skin disease (LSD) among the country's local cattle population, the DA said. LSD is a viral infection that can be fatal for cattle, the agency said in a press release issued on Saturday. Laurel ordered the confiscation, seizure and disposal of live cattle and buffaloes as well as products and by-products coming from Libya, Russia, South Korea and Thailand of shipments that do not comply with the memorandum, the DA said. He also tasked the DA's Veterinary Quarantine Office to conduct more rigorous and tighter inspections of live cattle and buffaloes arriving in the country, as well as their products and by-products.
