Two manufacturers of electric products have obtained court orders blocking local traders from infringing on their trademarks to market and distribute the products. Havells Limited and QRG Enterprises Limited obtained the order from the High Court blocking Mr Duncan Maina Gathu and Galactic Systems Limited from marketing and distributing circuit breakers, using its trademarks. The local dealers were blocked from dealing in any products bearing trademarks that are identical to the Havells trademarks, pending a hearing and determination of the petition. Through lawyers Lorna Mbatia and Billy Wesonga, the two manufacturers sought the order to restrain the traders from dealing with any goods that bear marks that are identical to their clients’ trademarks. The India-based manufacturers are also seeking orders to compel Jiji.co.ke to pull down all listings of products that bear marks that are identical to the Havells’ trademarks.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has rolled out austerity measures to cut spending due to insufficient financial resources. According to an internal memo seen by the Star dated March 14, 2024, CEO Twalib Mbarak directed staff to adopt austerity measures to mitigate the budget challenges. "The available financial resources are inadequate to sustain operations of the Commission for the remaining four months of the Financial Year, hence the need to apply austerity measures on budget utilisation," the memo reads in part. Other budget areas to be affected include printing, advertising, domestic travel and subsistence costs, foreign travel and purchase of equipment. To save on money used during training, EACC will start using office boardrooms to conduct meetings and virtual platforms for training and sensitisation.

VIENTIANE: Plans for the Hin Nam No National Park in Khammuan province to be given World Heritage Status by Unesco are one step closer to fulfilment following the agency’s acceptance of the application dossier. The application dossier is now being scrutinised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the advisory body to the World Heritage Committee, Phakhanxay said. Laos could be the first country in South-East Asia to create a transboundary world heritage site with a neighbouring country. Pending a favourable review, this mountainous region is poised to become one of Southeast Asia’s largest Natural World Heritage Sites. Spanning more than 200,000 hectares, it encompasses both the Hin Nam No National Park in Laos and the adjoining Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam.
