The official gazette published on Tuesday a decision issued by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli last week to amend some provisions of a decree on minimum wages of civil servants. The amended decree stipulates that as of April 1 the minimum wages be set at a monthly 10,500 pounds for employees at state institutions and economic entities as a highest estimate. The lowest estimate of minimum wages will be set at a monthly 3,500 pounds. PhD holders should receive a minimum of 7,000 pounds per month, while employees with a master’s degree should get 6,000 pounds every month.

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation ElSayed Elkosayer has affirmed that there is continuous follow-up and full coordination with the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) and with the support of the Prime Minister personally to release suitable quantities of corn, soybeans, and feed additives from Egyptian ports to support this industry. He explained that during the period from 31 March to 6 April, 210,000 tonnes of corn and soybeans were released, at a value of $97m, an increase of 50,000 tonnes over last week. He added that the release included 162,000 tonnes of corn, at a value of $59m, and 47,000 tonnes of soybeans, at a value of $35m, in addition to feed additives worth $3m, bringing the total of what was released during the period from 16 October 2022 to 6 April 2023, to about 3.756 million tonnes, including 2.702 million tonnes of corn, 1.054 million tonnes of soybeans and feed additives, with a total value of $1.85bn. He confirmed that the release aims to provide quantities of corn and soy in the markets, which are the basic ingredients for poultry feed, as well as farm animals.

At least one person was killed and 30 injured, many seriously, when a passenger train carrying about 50 people derailed in the Netherlands early Tuesday after hitting construction equipment on the track, Dutch emergency services said. Rescue teams were seen ferrying away the injured in pre-dawn darkness at the scene of the accident at Voorschoten, a village near The Hague. Egypt has announced that it will host the 12th World Urban Forum in 2024, during the first session of this year of the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya. He said estimates of urban developments in Egypt indicate that 69% of its people will live in cities by 2041. This requires Egypt to adhere to the program’s urban development agenda and work to develop smart solutions to urban challenges in order to achieve a better urban future. On the other hand, the Permanent Representative of Egypt welcomed the delegations of States to participate in the 12th World Urban Forum, hosted by Cairo in November 2024. The World Urban Forum is the world’s largest urban development event, the first of which was launched under the UN Human Settlements Program in 2001 to discuss ways to address the challenges of accelerated urbanization.
