CAIRO - 29 January 2023: Egypt’s ongoing development cooperation portfolio with the World Bank Group (WBG) comprises 14 projects worth approximately $7 billion, according to the Ministry of International Cooperation. The Ministry elaborated in a statement that the portfolio is spread across several priority sectors, along with 23 technical support, advisory and capacity-building projects. This comes alongside joint efforts to enhance private sector participation in development through cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA); both members of the WBG. On Sunday, The Minister of International Cooperation, Rania A. Al Mashat met with the World Bank Group (WBG) Regional Director for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions Nadir Mohammed to discuss efforts to stimulate the private sector and finalize the 2023-2027 Country Partnership Framework (CPF). The Minister discussed the measures and efforts undertaken by the Government of Egypt to enhance resilience, green transformation and gender equality.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina has launched the “Virtual Antiquities Museum” application, which utilizes the Oculus virtual reality glasses. It was made available to the public through the Oculus Store application platform, which provides the user with the possibility to visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum in a unique virtual reality experience. Though virtual reality, users can get up close and personal with a variety of artifacts without setting foot in the museum. The initiative is considered the first breakthrough for the library into the virtual world. The “Virtual Antiquities Museum” application follows on the success of the previous “Bibliotheca Alexandrina Virtual Antiquities Museum” app, which was selected as one of the five best finalists for the WSIS award in 2018, out of 685 nominated projects.

An Egyptian archaeological mission succeeded in finding several ancient tombs in the Saqqara necropolis, in Giza dating back to the era of the Old Kingdom, which extends between the years 2686 and 2181 BC. The second tomb belongs to a person called Meri, who bore many titles such as the keeper of the king’s secrets, and the assistant commander of the great palace. A statue of a person in a standing position was also found with his wife holding his foot, and on the other side is his daughter carrying a goose. The mission also found a shaft at a depth of 15 meters, at the bottom of which was a room containing a coffin made of limestone for a person called “Heka-shepes”, surrounded by many stone vessels. The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri said that the mission also found many amulets, cosmetics, statues for different deities, as well as pottery vessels.

A joint statement issued during Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s current visit to India affirmed that Sisi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their concern of the spread of terrorism worldwide. The leaders agreed that terrorism represents one of the most dangerous security threats on humanity, condemning the use of terrorism as a tool of foreign policy.
