CAIRO – 20 April 2023: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry received Thursday phone calls from his Indian and Dutch counterparts to discuss the developments in Sudan so as he presented Egyptian communications with regional and international parties to help broker a sustainable ceasefire. Both ministers expressed interest in coordinating with Egypt on securing care to their citizens in Sudan, agreeing on continuing consultations with the Egyptian side in the coming period. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement earlier on Thursday declaring that the remainder of Egyptian troops who had been held by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces were delivered to the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum in collaboration with the UAE and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRS). The Egyptian Armed Forces also issued a statement clarifying that the majority of soldiers, who were part of joint exercises with the Sudanese Army, had been returned on board of three Egyptian military transport aircraft on Wednesday.

The UAE has conducted efforts to secure the Egyptian soldiers who are in Sudan, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced. The two countries, Egypt and the UAE, have expressed appreciation to the International Committee of the Red Cross for its efforts in supporting the process of securing the Egyptian soldiers. The Egyptian soldiers detained in Sudan have been transferred from Meroe Airport to the capital, Khartoum, on Wednesday. The Rapid Support Forces in Sudan announced their transfer stressing that they will be handed over to Egypt when the nearest opportunity arises. “This took place during the clashes with the coup forces last Saturday, to the capital, Khartoum,” the Rapid Support Forces said on its official page on Twitter.

The remaining Egyptian soldiers that have been held in Sudan have arrived safely at Egypt’s embassy in the capital Khartoum. In a Thursday statement, the Egyptian Armed Forces spokesperson said that this was done in cooperation with all security agencies in Egypt and Sudan to ensure the return of the Egyptian troops that were participating in joint training with the Sudanese army. On Wednesday night, Egypt has given Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, better known as Hemedti, the leader of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) a 72-hour ultimatum to return Egyptian troops held in Sudan, DNE reported. The army spokesperson indicated that on Wednesday, three Egyptian transport evacuated the first batch of Egyptian troops, through three successive flights to an Egyptian military base in Cairo. At least 270 people have been killed and over 2,600 injured as the fighting rages for its fifth day, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) which cited Sudan’s Ministry of Health Emergency Operations Center.

Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait said on Tuesday that the application for the tax-free car import initiative for Egyptians working abroad will close after 26 days, adding that there is no intention to further extend the operation. Maait added that 100,000 Egyptians residing abroad have registered electronically to benefit from this initiative. Maait also announced the release of 800 imported cars from ports under the initiative and the total value of payments reached about $500m. Maait said that the government is committed to paying the deposits of Egyptians abroad who benefit from the initiative to facilitate the import of cars, on the scheduled dates, at the exchange rate at the time it becomes due. They will obtain it at the exchange rate at the time of recovery within three months.

Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan announced on Tuesday that the Sudanese army will observe the ceasefire proposed by international forces starting from 6 pm Tuesday for 24 hours. Earlier, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced the approval of a 24-hour ceasefire and accused the Sudanese army of breaching the truce.
