Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has announced his intention to run for a second term in the presidential election scheduled for December 2023. The registration period for the presidential candidates will run from 5 to 14 October. The National Elections Authority said that the presidential election will take place on 10-12 December for the domestic voters and on 1-3 December for the expatriate voters. Earlier, Egypt’s National Dialogue stressed the importance of ensuring the impartiality of the state institutions and bodies in the upcoming presidential election. The National Dialogue outlined several principles for conducting a pluralistic and competitive presidential election, which they considered essential for completing the democratic transition process in Egypt.

CAIRO – 2 October 2023: Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali al-Moselhy stated Monday that Egypt currently had 14 logistic zones securing over 50,000 direct jobs and 160,000 indirect jobs. Assistant to the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ibrahim Ashmawy told press in August that the logistic zones and trade centers that would be established at Suez, Kafr El Sheikh, and Daqahliyah would create 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. Ashmawy's statements came during the signing ceremony of the projects' contracts worth LE2.4 billion, asserting that further investment opportunities would be available in the coming four years. That is within the government's plan to reduce consumer prices given that the value of transport makes up 10-15 percent of the final cost.

The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) and several local banks are considering acquiring shares in EgyCOP, a direct investment company for carbon certificates, according to a document issued by the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) of the Cabinet. It is also discussing the accreditation mechanism for companies working in carbon certificates, to contribute to the national plan to reduce carbon emissions through investing in emission offsetting projects. He said that the company is complementary to the voluntary carbon market that the Egyptian Stock Exchange intends to launch this year. He told DNE that the company is still conducting some studies on the carbon certificates market, and is waiting to obtain a license from the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA). She said that there is a clear complementarity between the main goal of launching EgyCOP and the voluntary carbon market, as it is the first direct investment company operating in voluntary carbon markets.

Egyptian mobile operators are preparing to launch a trial run of the electronic SIM card (eSIM) technology, which allows customers to activate a data package from their service providers without using a physical SIM card. They said that the contracts are currently under final review and will be signed soon, followed by the trial run. An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is embedded inside the phone or the smart device. The eSIM technology offers several advantages, such as saving space, reducing costs, enhancing security, and facilitating international roaming. The media reported in September last year that the NTRA was negotiating with four international technology companies to develop the eSIM technology in Egypt for mobile phones, including the French iMedia.

Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt and UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda has called for new policies for concessional finance and the activation of mechanisms to de-risk financing and investment in climate action in developing countries. Mohieldin stressed that scaling up climate finance in developing countries requires new policies for concessional finance that include low-interest rates and long-term repayment and grace periods.
