“That’s where I’m like, ‘Oh, this person’s got to decondition themselves.’ ”Hayden runs a small server for an up-and-coming microblogging site called Mastodon. “The concept is very similar, but the culture is very different,” he says of Mastodon versus that other platform. My boss gave me what he claimed was his Mastodon address but when I searched, it only turned up errors. OTTAWA—Protesters at a so-called “Freedom Convoy” border blockade in southern Alberta were “incited” when a pastor told them they should be willing to die for their cause during last winter’s protest crisis, a local mayor told the Emergencies Act inquiry on Wednesday. Shortly after the sermon, more tractors came in to block the lane that was cleared through the negotiations, according to Willett. “We still have neighbours that won’t talk to each other because of the protest,” Willett said. Willett ascribed the protesters’ decision to leave to the fallout of the RCMP arrests, rather than the federal decision to invoke the Emergencies Act. Critics of the decision say the move was unnecessary and could set a bad precedent for future use of the emergencies powers.

Most school trustee incumbents, nominally autonomous but often captive of school administration, were terrified since “acclamation” was normally the route to re-election. Governing school board factions in two other hot spots, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) and Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) up in in the Kawarthas, easily succeeded in beating back dissenting voices. If the 2022 school trustee elections are any indication, we are a long way from that set of conditions. School Boards Matter: A Pan-Canadian Study of School Board Governance. “Public school board election results are in, and current chair is ready for productive ‘disagreements.’” The Record (October 24).
