Concert tours, once a key ingredient in the livelihood of musicians — be they mega popstars, indie favourites or up-and-comers — have become increasingly impractical for many musicians. Feeling the squeeze of inflation, the effects of the pandemic and an ongoing fear of illness, many artists have scaled back or cancelled live shows entirely. Audiences hungry for shows, but touring pantry is bareFans are hungry to see their favourite performers, to put it lightly. Artists big and small are looking for technical crew that dried up during the pandemic when live shows ground to a halt and workers fled the industry. Earlier in the fall, she had no choice but to scrap a handful of shows when one of her touring musicians fell ill with COVID-19.

It is a great personal and professional pleasure to send birthday greetings out from Art’s History to a fellow Kingstonian, Peter Milliken. Peter was born on this date in 1946. He served as Kingston’s MP from 1988 until 2011 and remains the longest-serving MP for the riding. More importantly, Peter was elected Speaker of the House of Commons in 2001 and was continuously re-elected by MPs of all party stripes to serve as their Speaker for the next ten years. A man of grace, class and born for friendship, I know all readers of Art’s History will join me in wishing Speaker Milliken a happy birthday.

Canada’s greatest strength is Canadians themselvesGeorge MonastiriakosCanada possesses unique strategic advantages on the world stage. While this has enabled the country to prosper beyond its founding fathers’ brightest dreams, Canada’s greatest strength has always been Canadians themselves. For example, Canada could use its unique strategic advantage to serve as an honest broker between partner states in NATO. As a middle power, Canada is well-placed to liaise between the traditionally dovish western European parties and their more hawkish American and eastern European counterparts. Canada’s greatest strength is Canadians themselves.

“His investment approach is a model for many, including the Canadian pension plans,” said Wiseman, who spent four years years as CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. He called Schwartz one of Canada’s most accomplished investors, who built Onex into a pre-eminent North American private equity firm. We benefited from our discipline,” said Wiseman, who described Schwartz as “unemotional at all times” in the dealmaking process. In May, he will step back from his role as CEO of what is now a firm with around US$47 billion under management. Schwartz has been married to Heather Reisman, founder and CEO of Indigo Books and Music, since 1982.

Stars’ first year head coach Pete DeBoer joined the Hang Zone on Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket [KTCK-AM] Wednesday to discuss Jason Robertson and where the Stars stand in the season so far. Here are some highlights, edited for clarity:Jason Robertson missed all of camp yet he’s hit the ground running this season, how impressed have you been with his performance? I mean to miss an entire training camp and come in and hit the ground running like he has. And thankfully, he has hit the ground running because we’ve needed those goals. He’s got a really unique game, and he’s got some God-given talent that knows where to go.

Starting Nov. 14, SickKids will “prioritize urgent, emergency and (the) most time-sensitive surgeries” to free up staff and space to help the hospital care for the soaring number of kids needing care. Earlier this month, the province’s Critical Care COVID-19 Command Centre asked adult hospitals to accept critically ill teenagers 14 and older to create capacity in children’s hospitals. Mississauga Hospital’s emergency department remains open to pediatric patients, and those who need to be admitted will be transferred to CVH. “If respiratory illness prevalence continues to grow, we expect to see even larger pediatric (emergency department) and in-patient volumes,” Rogers said. Surgical wait times for kids have risen during the pandemic and will likely grow longer given the current pressures on pediatric hospitals.

Bern’s Steak House, a Tampa institution established in 1956, is a temple of excess. In June, the inaugural Michelin Guide to Florida — specifically, Miami, Tampa and Orlando — was announced. After a brief tour (cigars, Bay of Pigs, mojitos) with a Cuban exile who referred to himself as “imported,” we hit Sanguich, a Bib Gourmand selection that specializes in Cuban sandwiches. (“Miami is vice, Orlando is mice, Tampa is nice,” a rep from Visit Tampa Bay told me.) At the Ravenous Pig, a Bib Gourmand selection, the beer garden was brimming with young families, with a dog and/or baby under almost every table.

The Stursberg lecture is held annually in honour of Canadian war correspondent Peter Stursberg. He was the first CBC journalist to cover Canadian troops in action using radio broadcasts during the Second World War. In 2014, he died at the age of 101 as the last living correspondent from the Second World War. At the lecture, Fiorella spoke the success of the organization’s methodology in verifying images online, which helped him last year while uncovering a massacre in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Fiorella said that one of the reasons behind Bellingcat’s international recognition is its production of digital, open-source information and its commitment to transparency in its published investigations.

In Calgary, apartment building construction booms as more Canadians embrace renting – CBC.caAcross the country, competition is fierce among apartment hunters as the rental market tightens. In Calgary, that struggle to find rental space is fueling an unprecedented amount of rental construction. Before the season, many Maple Leafs’ fans wondered why in the world the team would sign Kampf. Maple Leafs’ Fans Were Wrong about KampfAccording to many Maple Leafs’ fans, Kampf was a nobody. It was one of the reasons that last season’s Maple Leafs set franchise records for wins and points. This Season’s Plans for the Fourth LineIn the same way that the team successfully build a shutdown third line last season, it seemed to me that the organization’s offseason projebefore to this season was to build a fourth line. To do so, during the offseason, Maple Leafs’ general manager Kyle Dubas signed three players to the team – Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Adam Gaudette, and (later in the offseason) Zach Aston-Reese.
