Citing unnamed national security sources and documents, the reports outlined alleged influence campaigns in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. He began his testimony by reading from what he said was a memo drafted by Conservative operatives after “rumblings” of foreign interference in the 2021 election campaign. The memo concluded there was a “strong case to be made that there was a degree of influence exerted by an outside actor in the Chinese community” during the 2021 federal election.

In a financial update on April 24, CN Rail reported signs of weakness in the consumer-driven segments of its business, including plastics, hard goods and lumber. “Our current volumes reflect that we are in a mild recession,” chief executive Tracy Robinson told analysts on a conference call. CN Rail volumes have dropped six per cent so far in April, “reflecting weakness in the economy,” said chief financial officer Ghislain Houle. CN also announced it will create an intermodal service connecting Canada, the United States and Mexico, in partnership with two other North American railways.

“It’s completely undemocratic and it’s the sort of thing that needs to be recognized and reined in,” Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont said Monday. The spending is needed to ensure people know they are eligible for things such as the inflation-fighting cheques, Finance Minister Cliff Cullen said. Another document, provided by Cullen’s office, shows $500,000 has been budgeted for the child-care ad campaign alone, with additional money set aside for other initiatives. Some of that advertising is aimed at attracting more workers to the field, he said. Cullen said that campaign is aimed in part at fighting accusations by critics.
