LONDON, Ont. - Members of the Muslim community in London, Ont., are to host a vigil today to mark the second anniversary of the worst mass killing in the city’s history. Salman Afzaal, his wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal, were run down by a pickup truck on June 6, 2021. Prosecutors allege the attack was an act of terrorism targeting London’s Muslim community. Mayor Josh Morgan, Canada’s special representative on combating Islamophobia Amira Elghawaby, and members of the Afzaal family are among those expected to speak at the vigil.

Taking part in Tuesday’s debate were former NDP parliamentarian Olivia Chow, city councillor Josh Matlow, ex-police chief Mark Saunders, former deputy mayor Ana Bail?o, and former Liberal provincial education minister Mitzie Hunter. The daytime debate saw crossfire between candidates who had previously aimed many of their attacks in earlier debates at front-runner Chow. The latest Forum Research poll indicates Chow continues to grow her lead with support from around 38 per cent of decided voters. Chow and Saunders sparred over the budget later in the debate, with Saunders asking Chow how she would work with a police service he claimed she did not like.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Donnie Creek wildfire has grown into one of the largest blazes over the last century in the province. BC Wildfire Service records show it ranks second in provincial history, following the 2017 Plateau Fire at 5,210 square kilometres. Wildfire Service information officer Julia Caranci says the size and the impact of fires are two different subjects. WINNIPEG - Elections Manitoba is expecting faster results on election night Oct. 3, and has laid out a timeline that appears to be roughly twice as fast as the drawn-out affair experienced in Alberta last week. The independent agency is planning to use electronic vote-counting machines, also known as tabulators, in most locations for the first time. While Alberta used tabulators only for advance polls, Manitoba is to see them used for election-day polls as well. The machines being used by Manitoba are similar to ones already used in other jurisdictions including municipal elections in Winnipeg. “There’s an election, people are excited, they want to see the results,” said Royce Koop, who teaches political studies at the University of Manitoba.

In politics character is often revealed by supple coalition-building skills and the ability to maintain a sharp focus, in the face of noise on all fronts. A councillor who wants to be mayor solely on the strength of their two-term credentials is not qualified. Demanding action on AIDS, homelessness, child poverty and a long list of other social justice issues. Josh Matlow has a long list of municipal successes, but a much shorter list of Liberal supporters, which is curious for a lifelong Liberal partisan.
