That’s according to the hundreds of comments the government received about the idea over the last few months. In February, the Liberals asked the public to weigh in on their plan to let people opt out of a formal in-person or online ceremony and instead take the Oath of Citizenship with the click of a mouse. It’s expected to save people roughly three months of waiting between taking their citizenship test and officially becoming a Canadian. In the latter half of 2022, fewer than 10 per cent of citizenship ceremonies were in person, and the vast majority were held over video conference, according to government data provided to Parliament. Critics said government backlogs and a lack of available in-person ceremonies were a poor reason to threaten the time-honoured tradition.
Pride was born as a protest, it’s always been a protest, and is still a protest. Free speech is indeed still free: if Catholic parents, trustees and educators want to exercise their freedom they can do it without public funding. Do not begrudge anyone their party, but a party and a protest can be the same thing. Free speech is free and it is glorious. People who don’t like the protest part of Pride can sit this one out perhaps.
Gabriela is ready to move out of her parents’ home in Mississauga where she is living rent-free. Greek authorities rescued 91 migrants from a river islet and transferred them to a processing center near the border with Turkey, police said Sunday. The migrants had been on an islet on Evros River at least since Friday, when nongovernmental organizations emailed Greek authorities alerting them to their presence there. By early Sunday, the migrants had moved to the Greek side, enabling the rescue operation, a statement from the prime minister’s office said. Almost all of the land border between Greece and Turkey is formed by the Evros River, called Meric in Turkey. Greece has built a high fence along much of the border to prevent migrants crossing, and is planning to further extend it.

Seventy years ago, Canadian leaders turned away from the British model of media policy that rejected advertising-supported private broadcasting. The honourable early history of media policy in Canada needs to be embraced anew. Aird Commission findingsIn 1928, the Royal Commission on Radio Broadcasting, also known as the Aird Commission, was created to consider alternative models for the future of Canadian broadcasting. Creation of the CBC/Radio-CanadaIn 1936, the Canadian Broadcasting Act created the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada as a Crown corporation funded through fees known as receiver set licences (initially $2.50 per licence) with limited financing from advertising. Social media policy in the United States has generated echo chambers of misinformation and conspiracy and has certainly not curtailed the erosion of civic knowledge.
