Federal and provincial privacy authorities in Canada are pursuing a joint investigation into OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, after receiving a complaint about the firm's disclosure of personal information. The complaint that sparked the investigation claimed the company unlawfully collected, used and disclosed personal information without consent through ChatGPT, its artificial intelligence-powered chatbot. The investigation will examine whether OpenAI received valid and meaningful information-sharing consent from ChatGPT users based in Canada. It will also look at whether the company used information for unreasonable or illegitimate reasons. The statement said privacy offices often work together on issues with nationwide implications because privacy laws in all four provinces are substantially similar to federal legislation.

Vancouver-based company Lululemon says it will expand its headquarters in the city and create 2,600 jobs over the next five years. The announcement comes months after the federal government granted the company the ability to hire foreign workers for certain highly skilled positions, including management jobs, software engineers and computer technicians, without needing to apply for a labour market impact assessment. Federal Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne says if Ottawa hadn’t acted, the company’s headquarters may have left Vancouver. CEO Calvin McDonald says Lululemon has secured an additional 125,000 square feet of office space in downtown Vancouver because of the confidence it has in the agreement. A labour market impact assessment is a process sometimes used to determine if a company needs a foreign worker to fill a position because of a lack of Canadian workers or permanent residents available to do the job.

For McCormack, Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” was one of his first loves. And though he never saw the show’s original Broadway production, McCormack knew the score backwards by listening to the cast recording. But as challenging as the material is, Chameroy also said it’s incredibly rewarding to explore the various layers of Sondheim’s work. “But there’s something about a lot of Sondheim’s work and its ability to touch on the profound or the darkness in the world without being too in your face.

Being poor is sufficient reason for people to be allowed to undergo assisted suicide, an academic paper has argued. In an article published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, Canadian bioethicists Prof Amy Mullin and Kayla Wiebe said assisted suicide “should be available” for people “in unjust social circumstances”. Allowing people in poverty to opt for euthanasia was an “imperfect” solution, they admitted, but was “a ‘lesser evil’ between two or more less than ideal options”. And Canadian-born Professor Kevin Yuill, Chief Executive of Humanists Against Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, said the article highlights just how “irrational the case for euthanasia has become”. The Committee is currently hearing evidence about assisted suicide, including on access to palliative care and the role of medics.
