Power has been restored to most of Haines Junction after a problem earlier on Monday at the local generating station. The power went off on Monday morning following an exhaust leak at the station, ATCO Electric Yukon said in a statement late Monday afternoon. The temperature in the community was below –40 C, and the leak “prevented the facility from operating efficiently,” according to the company. This resulted in a full power outage to the community,” the statement read. Haines Junction resident Kari Johnston says she saw a huge plume of black smoke rising over the generating station as she drove into town around 11:40 a.m.

The firing of several employees at the makers of the Grand Theft Auto video games came as a complete surprise, according to one of the Canadian workers who was let go this past fall. Thirty-one Rockstar employees working in the U.K. were fired the same day (new window). He called Rockstar's claims of the fired workers leaking confidential information patently false. They have not provided any proof for those claims, either for the Canadian workers or the U.K. workers, he said. The Canadian economy shrank by a greater-than-expected 0.3 per cent in October, the largest drop in almost three years, on weakness in both the goods and services sectors, official data showed on Tuesday. Analysts had forecast that growth would dip by 0.2 per cent from September as the economy continues to adjust to U.S. trade measures. Last month, Statistics Canada reported 0.2 per cent GDP growth for September, and Canada avoided a technical recession largely due to a surge in defence spending. Governor Tiff Macklem said on Dec. 10 that he expected GDP growth to be weak in the fourth quarter. "That will close out a very choppy year for Canadian growth in still-choppy fashion."

Conservative supporters (34 per cent), too, were more inclined to foresee stress than Liberal (28 per cent) or NDP (26 per cent) voters. As it has in previous years, the Vancouver-based firm also quizzed Canadians about classic holiday traditions and foods.

The websites and apps of France’s national post office and its banking service have been hit by a suspected cyber-attack, disrupting deliveries and hampering online payments and transfers at the busiest time of the year, APA reports, citing The Guardian. French media reported that customers wanting to send last-minute parcels or collect items from post offices were being turned away. Online payments also remained possible but had to be authenticated via text message, it said. A 22-year-old suspect had been detained in relation to that incident, French media said. Prosecutors said last week that France’s counterespionage agency was investigating a suspected cyber-attack plot involving software that would have allowed remote users to control the computer systems of an international passenger ferry.
