OTTAWA—Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives are pulling further ahead of the governing Liberal party in national voting intentions amid a widespread desire for change across the country, a new poll suggests. The online survey from Abacus Data found the federal Conservatives have climbed to a seven-percentage-point lead over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, up from three points one month ago. The NDP had 21 per cent in the latest Abacus poll, up three percentage points, while the far-right People’s Party and Greens each had four per cent. What’s more, barely 20 per cent of survey respondents said Trudeau and the Liberals “deserve to be re-elected,” while more than 80 per cent said it is “time for a change in government.”How do Canadians feel about Poilievre? But Coletto also noted that 31 per cent of respondents said they don’t see a good option for the change in government they want.

What will it take for conservative politicians and big oil bosses to actually acknowledge that the wildfires ravaging our forests are fanned by the carbon emissions that have torqued up the world’s climate? In his deeply researched and compelling book, “Fire Weather: The Making of a Beast,” Vancouver-based journalist and author, John Vaillant, makes it clear that these are no ordinary forest fires. Kenney didn’t mention global warming that day either. And yet, the Conservative party has yet to tell us how it would slow the carbon emissions that cause global warming. But for these politicians and captains of the oil industry even the word “transition” has become toxic, never mind actually planning for it.

Faced with rising costs and falling income, Canadian news media are restructuring and experimenting with new content and business models. Podcast initiatives were developed and promoted through media partnerships, such as a true crime series by Postmedia with Antica Productions; a Toronto Star entrepreneurship podcast made available on Air Canada flights; and podcasts jointly commissioned by the BBC and CBC/Radio-Canada. Hebdos Québec, a group of 75 independent publications, acquired Réseau Sélect, an advertising network serving French-language weeklies. It says it will stop making news content available on any of its platforms in Canada if the act passes in its current form. The future of public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada became more polarised following the election of a new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Pierre Poilievre.

VANCOUVER - Hundreds more properties have been warned to be ready to evacuate on short notice after high winds fanned a massive wildfire in northeastern British Columbia that is the second largest in the province’s history. The Peace River Regional District issued the latest alert covering 370 more properties in remote areas north of Fort St. John Monday as winds whipped up the 4,660-square-kilometre Donnie Creek blaze. The service says winds responsible for the weekend trouble between Fort St. John and Fort Nelson aided firefighters on a separate blaze to the south, which prompted Thursday’s evacuation of the entire northeastern community of Tumbler Ridge. Environment Canada is calling for showers in the northeast on Tuesday, with between five and 10 millimetres of rain in the Fort St. John area, although the weather office says there is also a risk of gusty winds and lightning. An earlier version incorrectly stated that the Peace River Regional District issued an evacuation order covering 370 more properties Monday.

There’s nothing like seeing the captain of the winning team take the Stanley Cup from commissioner Gary Bettman and raise it to the heavens. In 2001, captain Joe Sakic didn’t lift the Cup, but handed it to 22-year veteran defenceman Ray Bourque. It’s not a straight line from the top of the draft to the Stanley Cup. Sometime between the handing over of the Stanley Cup and the coronation of Bedard as the first overall pick, Bettman is expected to deal with some heavy issues. But maybe Treliving wants Lucic’s toughness.

The Raptors have the 13th pick in the June 22 NBA draft and, with less than two weeks remaining until they are on the clock, crunch time is approaching. More of a passer in one college season limited by back issues, he does seem to be a hustle-type defender, which is a skill that should translate to the NBA. Keyonte George, 19The six-foot-four Baylor freshman guard may be a bit on the small size for a combo guard, which is where he likely ends up. Not a great shooter in one college season, but he could be a scoring threat on a young, torn-down roster if that’s the way the Raptors go. Gradey Dick, 19The six-foot-six Kansas freshman wing can shoot, and the Raptors as a team didn’t shoot nearly well enough this past season.
