Ramaphosa delivered the party’s manifesto to thousands of ANC supporters at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday. The rally came as South Africa faces increasing poverty, unemployment and crime and a crippling electricity crisis. According to Ramaphosa, the ANC plans to create more than 2.5 million job opportunities in the next five years. He said some of these would come from South Africa’s transition from coal-based power generation to cleaner energy. South Africa’s elections are expected to be highly contested, with some opposition parties joining forces to form a coalition if the ANC receives less than 50% of the national vote.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Polls suggest South Africa will face a historic turning point in a national election in May as the ruling African National Congress could lose its majority for the first time since coming to power in the country’s first all-race vote at the end of apartheid in 1994. That would force the ANC into a coalition — a first for South Africa — to stay in government and keep Cyril Ramaphosa as president. It was admired for leading the anti-apartheid movement and freeing South Africa from the system of forced racial segregation. WHAT’S LIKELY TO HAPPENOpinion polls predict that South Africa is heading for a coalition government for the first time. South Africa has 14 political parties currently represented in Parliament and more than 300 parties registered nationally.

It's a challenging genealogical journey to recover the names of enslaved ancestors. 1870 was the first time formerly enslaved African Americans were named on the federal census. The challenge is to find the names that can lead a person today to answers about their enslaved ancestors. In 1865, my second great-grandmother, Ann Harris, married Nelson Roach in Guilford County, NC. We both then wondered who was Nelson Roach, the man I thought was my second great-grandfather.

Algerian authorities continue to crackdown on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly five years after the Hirak protest movement first began, said Amnesty International in a press release. After the Hirak protest movement was halted due to Covid-19 in 2020, the Algerian authorities have stepped up their repression of peaceful dissent, targeting critical voices and political opponents. Dozens of peaceful protesters, journalists, activists, and human rights defenders continue to languish behind bars for criticizing the authorities. The NGO said human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and trade unionists should be able to exercise their rights and freely express critical views without fear of reprisals. The Hirak protest movement began in February 2019 when largely peaceful mass demonstrations took place across Algeria opposing then President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s re-election.
