Tunisia’s president seems to be courting Iran, in a shift that risks further isolating the cash-strapped country. While the Arab Summit in Tunisia reiterated support for the two-state solution in 2019, Kais Saied vowed in his presidential election to oppose normalization with Israel, an act he described as high treason. As Tunisia heads to insolvency, the president took solace in populism taking aim at Israel to win support at home at the expense of alienating the west. Tunisia, due to its internal multi-pronged crises, needs allies who can help it redress and improve its social and economic outlook. Scrapping the two-state solution, means war!

In the shadow of the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States rushed troops and military aid to a swath of West Africa to help French forces stop the spread of Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. More than a decade later, and with hundreds of millions of dollars in security assistance spent, that regional counterterrorism effort has largely failed. Groups that have declared allegiance to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State are on the march. Military coups have toppled civilian-led governments in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Niger. The new leaders have ordered American and French troops out, and in some cases invited Russian mercenaries in to take their place.

Muslims throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region will celebrate Hajj (Pilgrimage) to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, from June 14-19, and Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) on June 16. The annual Hajj and Eid al-Adha are two of the most sacred holidays in Islam. Government offices, private businesses, financial institutions, and schools typically close for at least three days for the Eid al-Adha observance. Militant attacks are possible amid Eid al-Adha; militant groups have previously targeted markets, mosques, and other major gathering sites during the holiday period. Some countries may accordingly issue security alerts effective during the Eid holiday period out of caution.

To reach the 11 GW, the IEA said the pace of deployment “needs to accelerate” in most regions and most countries, including the European Union, the United States and India. The report noted the need for more deployment in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. “This report makes clear that the tripling target is ambitious but achievable – though only if governments quickly turn promises into plans of action,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. Solar accounts for half of the future capacity explicitly identified by governments across the world, the IEA said. It predicted that if countries meet their ambitions for 2030, installed solar capacity would surpass hydropower as the world’s largest source of installed renewable capacity.

The state Senate passed the new masking bill — negotiated by both chambers to remedy concerns on the removal of a pandemic-era health exemption — in a 28-0 vote that Senate Democrats were absent from in protest. Republicans supporters say the legislation was prompted in part by the widespread use of masks by those protesting on college campuses nationwide against Israel’s war in Gaza — including at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Another addition to the bill would allow some federal political committees greater latitude in moving contributions to county and state parties in North Carolina. Senate Republicans said that language would remove obstacles for groups like the Republican Governors Association and the Republican Attorneys General Association to give directly to the North Carolina Republican Party to assist in future elections. Now, Pare told The Associated Press she was happy with the health provision, saying it was “the right thing to do.” The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services drafted that specific language, she said.
