Following Apple’s decision to boot the Fortnite game off its App Store, Ebay has been flooded with offers for iPhones where the cult shooter-survival game is pre-installed, with some sellers asking for as much as US$10,000 (RM41,675). Numerous offers for used iPhones with Fortnite installed have since surfaced on the auctions website, with most sellers asking for at least US$2,000 (RM8,335) in the US or €2,000 (RM9,862) in Germany. “This iPhone will come with Fortnite installed on it and everything else will be deleted and removed,” says one US seller valuing their iPhone 11 at US$2,500 (RM10,418) – roughly four times the usual price. The dispute between Apple and Epic Games originally flared up over the distribution of income from in-app purchases on iPhones and iPads. Apple’s 30% levy has been in place since the launch of the App Store in 2008 and, with a few exceptions, content in apps must run on Apple’s system.
