Smartphone users envious of the iPhone X’s facial unlocking feature may not have to wait much longer, thanks to a new solution designed for Android handsets. The Taiwanese 3D Imaging company, LIPS Corporation, has announced a complete solution for 3D scanning and true 3D facial recognition on Android devices. According to LIPS, the device ‘aims squarely at providing an iPhone X Face ID-like unlock feature for the Android platform as well as mobile 3D scanning’. The camera, about the same width and thickness as the phone, performs general 3D scanning and also 3D facial recognition using infrared laser projection coupled with a pair of sensors which enable the required depth information to be computed.
