The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced that it is adding the gRPC open source protocol to its existing list of projects. Google has been promoting it as the preferred protocol for developing contemporary, cloud native applications designed as microservices. The most notable open source project to take advantage of this protocol is etcd, a distributed key/value store developed by CoreOS. Kubernetes, Docker and other successful open source projects rely on etcd and gRPC for cluster management. Kubernetes, the open source container orchestration engine was the first project to be accepted by CNCF.
