Justice JS Chelameswar’s criticism of the collegium in appointing the Supreme Court and high court judges could not have come up at a more timely moment. By virtue of being the fifth in the line of seniority, Justice Chelameswar is a de jure member of the five-member collegium. Justice Chelameswar has also said he would not attend collegium meetings but would demand that minutes of meetings be recorded. Justice Chelameswar will serve in the Supreme Court and in the collegium until mid-2018. Justice Chelameswar has raised genuine criticisms and also offers valid suggestions on how the collegium should function.
