One of the most common misconceptions about organic farming is that it doesn’t use pesticides. Scale up to commercially-grown organic food, and farmers require pesticides to protect their crops. The list of pesticides allowed in organic farming is shorter than the list conventional growers use. Though organic food is prohibitively expensive for some, Deschanel argues that “growing your own organic produce is actually pretty simple,” and purports to share with viewers how to do it. As I mentioned, organic farming also uses pesticides, insecticides, and other agricultural chemicals—they’re just mostly naturally derived instead of synthetic.
