Members of two ruling Awami League wing organizations erased former president Ziaur Rahman's name from a signboard in front of the Zia Memorial Museum. They called Zia a “controversial” leader and argued that a Liberation War museum cannot be named after him. The protesters demanded renaming it Liberation War museum before Independence Day. Zia, a sector commander during the Liberation War, went on to become the president of Bangladesh and founded the BNP on September 1, 1978. The development came a day after Nowfel, an MP from Chittagong 9, proposed renaming the museum in a Cabinet meeting.
