Zed bass guitarist and Akaroa resident Ben Campbell has bought the Grand Hotel, the adjacent Waeckerleâs Cottage, and 1909 sqm of surrounding land with plans to restore the buildings. Rock star turned Akaroa restaurateur Ben Campbell is planning to breathe new life into one of the best-known historic landmarks in the small Banks Peninsula town, southeast of Christchurch. Campbell is the bass guitarist for pop rock group Zed, who topped the charts in 2000 with Renegade Fighter and later Glorafilia. Joseph Johnson/Stuff Ben Campbell already owns Ma Maison. Campbell’s plan for Waeckerle’s cottage is to sympathetically restore it as a living museum and make it available for short-term rental.
