The election of corruption accused Zandile Gumede as chair of the eThekwini region is an accurate reflection of a serious problem right across the ANC, writes Ebrahim Harvey. I was not in the least surprised that former eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede, was elected chair last week in that region's ANC electoral conference, despite the fact that she faces serious and incriminating corruption allegations to the tune of a staggering R320 million waste contract which hangs over her head. At first glance, you might wonder how that is possible. But it is so and has been that way for a long time. I'm reminded now of the ANC's Polokwane elective conference in 2007 when the majority of delegates voted for former president, Jacob Zuma, despite the avalanche of allegations of corruption and fraud hanging over his head and the fact that another former president, Thabo Mbeki, had dismissed him as his deputy in 2005 after the Hilary Squires judgment found Zuma's friend and financial adviser Schabir Shaik guilty of corruption.
